PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare the qualifying learner to practice as a farmer in the farming field of the farmers choice, be it agronomy, horticulture, animal husbandry or a combination of any of the mentioned fields.
This qualification reflects the needs of farming in South Africa both now and in the future: it gibes accessibility and flexibility to the learner and the employed. The level of flexibility reflects the multiple job roles, organisational requirements and changing technological nature of the agricultural industry and at the same time, it allows the individual to work towards a national recognised qualification. |

The structure of this unit standard-based qualification makes possible the recognition of prior learning, as its intention is to recognise all relevant skills learners already possess. ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
The assessment criteria is associated with the outcomes of the qualification in a sense that each unit standard that forms this qualification has assessment criteria. The outcomes reflect further learning and articulation possibilities, given the fact that a learner will be able to move horizontally and vertically from one qualification to the other by adding electives standards and intensifying the core standards. The unit standards are so portably that a learner can exit into other qualifications.
Integrated assessment Integrated assessment at the level of qualification provides an opportunity for learners to show that they are able to integrate concepts, ideas and actions across unit standards to achieve competence that is grounded and coherent in relation to the purpose of the qualification. Integrated assessment must judge the quality of the observable performance, but also the quality of the thinking that lies behind it. Assessment tools must encourage learners to give an account of the thinking and decision-making that underpin their demonstrated performance. Some assessment practices will be of a more practical nature while others will be of a more practical nature while others will be of a more theoretical nature. The ratio between action and interpretation is not fixed, but varies according to the type and level of qualification. A broad range of task-orientated and theoretical assessment tools may be used, with the distinction between practical knowledge and disciplinary knowledge maintained so that each takes its rightful place. In particular assessors should check for: The learner must demonstrate an ability to consider a range of options and make decisions about: Information gathered and reported about farming Their role in running a framing business The legal requirements and parameters within which they operate. The learner must demonstrate an understanding of: Farming responsibly in harmony with nature. Their role in environmental care and responsibility to the community at large. The legal requirements and parameters within which they operate. The learner must demonstrate ability to: Function effectively and safely as a member of a team under difficult environmental conditions. Act ethically and use sound judgement when faced with difficult environmental situations. |

Benchmarking was done against the NQF of New Zealand and the Australian Qualifications Framework. |
MODERATION OPTIONS |
Anyone assessing a learner against these unit standards must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
Any institution offering learning that twill enable achievement of these unit standards or will assess these unit standards must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures. Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against these units standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA. |
CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
Assessors must have proficiency in the subject matter of the discipline or learning area relevant to the standards and qualifications they are responsible for. The assessor should either have the same or higher qualification than the one being assessed. In terms of levels, Primary Agriculture Education training Authority will recommend that an assessor must have qualification of at least one level above the one being assessed.
The assessor must demonstrate the ability to: Understand what forms of assessment re appropriate to their discipline/field and to the NQF level being assessed; Understand the `language` of the field they are assessing, i.e. both the technical terminology as well s the ways of thinking and doing that are required of the to be competent as assessors; Regularly ask learners for feedback on assessment in order to constantly monitor and improve their (assessors`) practice; Know the curriculum and trainers through regular contact and provide trainers with derailed feedback; Take language factors into consideration when conducting assessment, using interpreters; Ensure that learners are clear about what is expected of them; Treat learners with respect and sensitivity; Demonstrate a broad understanding of outcomes-based forms of assessment and the NQF. |
