PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to understand the nutrient requirements and fertilization methods of growing vines.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nutrient requirements of vines.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fertilization methods of growing vines.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the nutrient requirements of vines.

    1 The importance to analyse soil and leaf is explained in relation to the criteria for fertilization 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2 The reasons for fertilization in vine growth are explained in relation to wine-, table- or raisin grapes 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reasons may refer to optional vigour and relative low nutrient requirements of selected vines compared to other crops.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3 The functions of elements and plant reactions are explained in relation to a deficiency in or excess of fertilization. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4 The functions of macro- and micro-elements in a fertiliser are explained in relation to plant needs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Macro-elements refer to nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.
    Micro-elements refer to zinc, iron, boron, and aluminium.

    5 The symptoms of macro- and microelement deficiencies and toxicity in vines are explained in relation to plant needs.

    1 The principles of maintaining fertilization of a vine are explained in relation to vineyard needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2 The source of macro and micro-elements are explained in relation to fertilisation maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3 The application timing of macro and micro-elements of such as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4 Methods of fertiliser application are identified according to industry requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods may refer to application of microelements to soil, foliar application and irrigation systems using water-soluble fertilizers through micro and drip irrigation systems
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5 The reasons for and method of organic fertilization is identified as an alternative form of chemical fertilization. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
