The learner will be able to understand the difference between cultivars and the ways of improving plant material for different cultivars.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of a cultivator and a clone.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of scion cultivars.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of rootstock cultivars.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of improvement of plant material for different cultivars.

    Demonstrate an understanding of a cultivator and a clone.

    1. Grapes are classified in relation to scope of work.

    1. The difference between cultivars and clones are explained according to criteria.

    Cultivars may include but are not limited to European and American varieties.

    Demonstrate an understanding of scion cultivars. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The important properties of scion cultivars are identified in relation to the South African context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Scion cultivars may include but are not limited to wine-, table- and raisin grapes.
    Properties refer to growth, yield, time of ripening and root resistance for the different cultivars.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The production purpose of different cultivars is explained using own words. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of rootstock cultivars. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The adaptability of rootstock to different physical and chemical factors is explained using own words. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Rootstock cultivars must include wine-, table- and raisin grapes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The resistance to soil borne pests and diseases in rootstock cultivars are identified for wine-, table- and raisin grape rootstock cultivars. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The compatibility between scion and rootstock cultivars is explained using own words. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate an understanding of improvement of plant material for different cultivars.

    1. The selection of vine material for scion cultivars is explained in relation criteria.

    2. Vine material for rootstock cultivars is selected according to criteria.

    3. A plant improvement scheme for wine-, table- and raisin grapes is explained using own words.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
