PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to administer husbandry practices to farm animals by injecting, inoculating, castrating, dehorning, marking animals for identification and keeping records for statistical purposes.


A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Administer injections and inoculations to farm animals.
  • Castrate farm animals to manage breeding.
  • Dehorn farm animals to ensure the safety of the animals.
  • Mark farm animals for identification purposes.
  • Record statistics of the farm animals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Basic equipment used to dehorn farm animals is prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment refers to knife, gas dehorner and embryonic wire used for the dehorning of farm animals.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Farm animals are prepared for dehorning procedures according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation may refer to immobilizing an animal, restraining the animal in a crush, throwing the animal, using an immobilizer or making use of facilities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Farm animals are dehorned according to workplace procedures.

    4. Post-dehorning problems are identified according to animal health indicators.

    Information may refer to counting of livestock and weighing of farm animals.

    2. Records are kept and maintained according to workplace procedures and scope of work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Information in records is reported according to workplace procedures.

  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
