PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to control nematodes chemically in crops and take the necessary safety precautions when working with chemicals.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of chemical control for nematodes.
  • Prepare for chemical control of nematodes.
  • Apply nematicides to control nematodes.
  • Perform end of chemical control procedures.

    Range: Crops may include but are not limited to sorghum, maize, groundnuts, sunflower, beans, soya beans, sugarcane, wheat, rye, barley, cotton and potatoes.

    Nematodes refer to any parasite or free-living worm with slender shape.
    Nematicides refer to a poisonous chemical that kills nematodes.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of chemical control for nematodes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The growing needs of plant are identified according to basic plant growth factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Plant growth factors may refer to carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, nutrients or food and warmth.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The function of the plant roots is explained according to provision of nutrients and anchor for the plant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Plants infected with nematodes are identified according to visual infection symptoms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Visual infection symptoms refer to above ground, uneven growth, stunted growth, roots and swelling or galls on roots
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Types of soil most commonly infected with nematodes are identified within scope of work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Controlling of nematodes using nematicides is explained according to benefits and disadvantages of chemical use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Benefits may refer to strong growth which results in increase of yield, reduced cost in weed control, efficient use of fertilizer by plants, more drought resistant and the increase in yield by subsequent crops.
    Disadvantages may refer to cost and high toxic content

    Prepare for chemical control of nematodes.

    1. Personal preparation is done according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The applicator is checked and prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Checking may refer to cleaning of the applicator and lubricating all moving parts. The applicator may refer to a wheelbarrow applicator.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Nematicides are prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation may refer to filling procedures and determining the application rate of nematicides.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply nematicides to control nematodes.

    1. Nematicides are applied according to workplace procedures.

    1. Applicators and protective clothing are cleaned and stored according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Nematicides and waste from the cleaning process are handled and dispatched according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Nematicides are stored according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Faulty or broken applicators and chemical containers are reported according to workplace procedures.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.

  • Workplace procedures refer to place of work procedures, prescribed procedures from the manufacturer of equipment, personal, equipment and environmental safety procedures, best practices and applicable legislation.
  • "Over" and "under" spraying refers to too little application of nematicides or too much application of nematicides.
