PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learners will be able to demonstrate an understanding of different fruit cultivars and the influence of the geographical region, climates, soils and site on the growth of deciduous fruits.


A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the different deciduous fruit cultivars.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the climatic requirements for growing deciduous fruit.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of site selection for deciduous fruit production on a farm.

    1 The kinds of deciduous fruit are identified according to local and important deciduous fruit cultivars. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Deciduous fruit cultivars may refer to as peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, pears and apples.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Possible uses of deciduous fruit cultivars are identified according to application purposes 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Possible uses may refer to desserts, canning, drying, jam, juice, and baby foods
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The characteristics of various deciduous fruit cultivars are identified in relation to physical and handling characteristics.

    The characteristics of various cultivars may include but is not limited to the differences between e.g. yellow cling and dessert loose pip peaches and stone and pome fruit kinds

    4. The major fruit defects are identified according to internal and external physical features

    Defects may refer to split pip in peaches, internal breakdown in plums and bitterpit in apples

    Demonstrate an understanding of the climatic requirements for growing deciduous fruit

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Regions for growing of deciduous fruit cultivars are identified in relation to the climate and origin 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Global geographic regions best suited to deciduous fruit production are identified in relation to northern and southern hemispheres. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Harvesting and marketing months are identified in relation to local and global markets. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of site selection for deciduous fruit production on a farm. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1.The different soil types used for deciduous fruit production are identified according with deciduous fruit needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Soil preparation for deciduous fruit production is identified in relation with depth, water logging, layering and profiling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3.External environmental factors influencing the growing habits of deciduous fruit trees are explained in reference to optimum growth 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    External environmental factors may refer to sunlight exposure - north or south facing slopes - in relation to shoot growth and re-productivity. Elevation affects the growth habits of trees with reference to altitude, winter temperature, microclimate on delayed foliation and uneven blossom. Difference in chilling requirements between different fruit kinds and cultivars.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.

    The learner will be able to use science and technology effectively by evaluating information on fruit cultivars. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING 
    The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of site selection as a set of related systems by explaining how the situation of an orchard effects productivity thereof and the income obtained there from.
