PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the promogation of deciduous fruit trees on a commercial scale.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the germination and growth process of the seed of a deciduous fruit tree.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the vegetative propagation of deciduous rootstock material.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the budding/grafting process using a selected cultivar.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of good nursery practices.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the germination and growth process of the seed of a deciduous fruit

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The requirements for germination of deciduous fruit seed are explained with varying maturity as well as the conditions and process of stratification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The stage and the process of sowing are explained using own words 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The requirements for growth of a seedling are explained in a nursery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The stage at which the budding/grafting process may take place is explained using own words. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the vegetative propagation of deciduous rootstock material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The selection criteria for suitable clonal rootstock material are explained according to selection criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The selection criteria may include but is not restricted to characteristics such as root-borne diseases, dwarfing and precocity (Precocity - Flowering or fruiting early).

    2. Suitable shoots to be used as rootstock material is defined in relation with development standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Development standard may refer to required length, thickness thereof, time of year and stage of development.

    3. The method of establishment of mother plantations is explained in relation material of origin 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The stage at which budding/grafting process may take place are identified according to criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The stage may refer to but not restricted to season, stage of development and the condition of the seedling.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the budding/grafting process using a selected cultivar.

    1. Good quality scion or grafting material is identified for stone and pome fruit kinds.

    2. The importance of using good quality rootstock and scion/grafting materials are explained in relation to certified virus-free material for both 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Methods for budding and grafting of deciduous fruit trees are identified in relation with most common used methods.

    Demonstrate an understanding of good nursery practices

    1. Requirements to growing of good quality nursery trees are identified in relation to soil types 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Importance of using virus-free materials is explained in relation to deciduous fruit trees propagation 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Good management practices are identified in a nursery 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    3. : Management practices may include but not limited to weed control, fertilization, irrigation, pest and disease management.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. A tree suitable for planting in an orchard is choosing according to criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Criteria may refer to the root system, length, thickness of stem below and above union and the featheriness of the tree.

    The learner will be able to identify use science and technology effectively and critically to ensure and understanding of aspects such as the techniques involved in the budding/grafting process, and in the management of pests and diseases including showing responsibility towards maintaining a safe and healthy environment

    The learner will be able to understand the process as a set of related systems by explaining/demonstrating the importance of a well-managed nursery of virus-free true-to-type trees to the well-being of the deciduous fruit industry as a whole and thus also to job security of the individual worker. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO CONTRIBUTING 
    The learner will be able to contributing to the personal development of each learner participating as a responsible citizen in life by being aware of the affects of not being safety orientated as well as being sensitive to the cultural diversity of the team.

    Terminology
  • Workplace procedures refer to place of work procedures, prescribed procedures from the manufacturer of equipment, personal, equipment and environmental safety procedures, best practices and applicable legislation.
  • Stone fruit - A fruit with a hard stone core-like pit e.g. peach.
  • Pome fruit - A fruit with firm flesh with a central core of seeds, like the pomegranate e.g. Apple, Pear or, Orange
  • Scion - A shoot of a plant that can be used for grafting or planting
  • Rootstock - A plant into which a plant can be grafted.
