PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to demonstrate methods of catching, restraining and moving of farm animals.


A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Prepare to move farm animals.
  • Catch and restrain farm animals.
  • Move and contain farm animals.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to move farm animals. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Animals refer to chickens, cattle, sheep, goats, horses and pigs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Personal preparation is done according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Catching and restraining materials/equipment and facilities are prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restraining materials/equipment may refer to ropes and immobilizes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Holding and handling facilities are prepared according to workplace procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Catch and restrain farm animals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Approaching and catching procedures for a group of animals is demonstrated according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Approaching and catching procedures for an individual animal is demonstrated according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range: Demonstrate an approaching and catching procedure for chicken, goat, sheep or pig is and demonstrate an approaching and catching procedure for cattle or horses.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Restraining procedures for an individual animal is demonstrated according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Restraining procedures for a group of animals is demonstrated according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The animal is held according to the methods applied on the farm and the facilities that are available.

    Move and contain farm animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Animals are moved according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Animals are contained in a crush or handling facility according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The handling facility may refer to the use of restraining equipment such as an immobiliser or neck clamp.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The process of weighing animals on weighing equipment is performed according to workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.

    Terminology
    Workplace procedures refer to place of work procedures, prescribed procedures from the manufacturer of equipment, veterinary procedures, animal health -, personal, equipment and environmental safety procedures, best practices and applicable legislation.
