PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of farm animal species, breeds and factors influencing their health.


A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of farm animal species, breeds and their purpose on a farm.
  • Recognize external signs indicating good health in farm animals.
  • Recognize productive signs indicating good health in farm animal.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of farm animal species, breeds and their purpose on a farm. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The visual differences and characteristics in farm animal species are identified within own words. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The visual differences and characteristics between farm animal breeds are explained according to breed guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The functional purpose of farm animal species is explained according to needs within the society. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Recognize external signs of good health in farm animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. External physical signs relating to the health of farm animals are identified according to normal healthy farm animals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    External physical signs refer to animal sounds, physical characteristics of feces, normal resting and walking gait of farm animals, skin or feathers or hair coverings of animals and their hooves, legs, horns and combs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The presence of ecto-parasites on farm animals and report according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ecto-parasites refer to ticks, flies and lice.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Recognize the productive signs indicating good health in farm animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Acceptable levels of feed consumption in healthy animals are identified according to the standards set by industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The growth and production rate of farm animals are evaluated against the desired results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Acceptable levels of mobility and aggregation in healthy animals are identified according to health productive farm animal signs. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
