PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to burn a field of sugarcane, harvest, grab-load green and burnt sugarcane and build sugarcane stacks in order to ready for transportation, under supervision.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of factors influencing the harvest of sugarcane.
  • Burn a field of sugarcane under supervision.
  • Harvest and grab-load sugarcane.
  • Build sugarcane stacks.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of factors influencing the harvest of sugarcane. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Reasons for burning a sugarcane field before harvesting are explained according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Burning may refer to hygienic purposes such as killing of harmful insects, preventing the spreading of diseases and pests, field to be ploughed out, geographical areas that requires burning and sugarcane in cold climates that require maximum heat from the sun to stimulate re-growth of sugarcane.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Safety procedures to adhere to when a sugarcane field is burnt according to environmental and personal safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety procedures should refer to burning of sugarcane near un-burnt cane fields and any adjacent field.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Factors that influence the quality of green and burnt sugarcane are explained before any cutting procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Factors that lower the cane sugar content (sucrose) in sugarcane are explained according to growth factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors lowering the sucrose content of sugarcane refers to fertiliser application and irrigation during the rapid or active period of sugarcane growth.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Factors that lower the cane sugar content (sucrose) in sugarcane are explained according to harvesting procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors lowering the sucrose content of sugarcane refers height of topping and base cutting because sweetness of sugarcane diminishes towards the top. Sugarcane deteriorates from the time it is harvested whether burnt, burnt and cut immediately or burnt and left standing in the field.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Burn a field of sugarcane under supervision.

    1. Personal preparation is done according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Equipment to burn a sugarcane field is prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment refers to water cart, tractor, fire lighter, cane knives and fire beater.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Equipment to burn a sugarcane field is used according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The designated sugarcane area is burnt according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Workplace procedures may refer to hand signals agreed according to the emergency strategy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Precautions of fire spreading to adjacent field are taken according to workplace procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Harvest and grab-load sugarcane. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Sugarcane refers to green sugarcane and burnt sugarcane. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Cane knives used for harvesting purposes are prepared and maintained according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A long a handled cane knife is used for cutting burnt cane and short handled cane knives are used for cutting trash cane. Preparation and maintaining may refer to the sharpening of the knives.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The area for stacking is determined to ensure accessibility to the tractor and trailer for the loading of cut sugarcane. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Personal preparation is done according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Sugarcane is base-cut and windrowed according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Base-cut refer to topping and trashing in such a way so that the cane is cut at ground level, topped between the 6th node and the meristem and that approximately 80% of leaves are removed.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Sugarcane is grab -loaded according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Grab-load refers to 2 or 3 rows of cane placed on one another with bottom ends together.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Build sugarcane stacks 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The site where the stack is to be build is prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation may refer to the removal of debris from the site where the stack is to be built.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The stack is build to fit local transport requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Transport requirements refer to about 4 meters wide, have a mass of 3 to 5 tons, to be wedge shaped and provision made for two chains to pass under the cane stack in order to be accessible to a tractor and trailer from beneath.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Common problems associated with sugarcane stack building are solved within scope of work. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.

    The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by understanding the factors that impact on the quality of sucrose in sugarcane.

    Terminology
  • Workplace procedures refer to place of work procedures, prescribed procedures from the manufacturer of equipment, personal, equipment and environmental safety procedures, best practices and applicable legislation.
  • Cane and sugarcane is synonymous.
  • Cane knives refer to knives specially designed for cutting sugarcane called a panga.
