PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to care for the general health of farm animals by using basic veterinary practices.


A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the birth process.
  • Administer post-natal care to farm animals.
  • Apply basic veterinary practices.
  • Dip and drench farm animals.
  • Care for the hooves of farm animals.

    Range: The context and range of this unit standard cover the following species of farm animals: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and horses.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the birth process

    1. The signs of a birthing process are identified according to basic veterinary guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The birthing process is explained according to basic veterinary guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Birthing problems and assisting procedures are identified in reference to the birthing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Caring procedures for breeding stock are explained in terms of health, environment, nutritional requirements and reproductive performance.

    Administer post- natal care to farm animals

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Farm animals and offspring are monitored according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Signs of oestrus are identified as described by veterinary guidelines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Oestrus is the condition of animals receptive to mating and is referred to as being on heat.

    3. Mating of farm animals are identified, recorded and reported according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Supervision of animal mating may be included within workplace procedures.

    4. Care for breeding is administered in reference with health, environment, nutritional requirements and reproductive performance.

    Apply basic veterinary practices

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Equipment required to carry out basic veterinary practices are identified according to animal health needs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Basic veterinary practices may refer to the treatment of cuts, wounds and abscesses.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. A wound on a farm animal is treated according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Treatment of a wound may include cleaning and dressing of the wound.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. A cut on a farm animal is cleaned, stitched and dressed according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Abscess on a farm animal is treated by lancing, cleaning and dressing them according to workplace procedures.

    Dip and drench farm animals 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Needs to dip farm animals are identified in relation to tick infestation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Needs to drench farm animals are in relation to signs of internal parasites and parasite infestation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Equipment for dipping and drenching is identified according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment may refer to a knapsack, spray race, plunge dip, pour on and dosing guns.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Farm animals are dipped and drenched according to workplace procedures 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Care for the hooves of farm animals 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Problems with the hooves of farm animals are identified according to animal health reasons. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Animals with hooves include cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and horses
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Equipment required to care for and maintain the hooves of farm animals are identified according with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment may be clippers, knives and a rasp.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Hooves are clipped according to normal veterinary guidelines and workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Wounds or abscesses on the hooves are cleaned and dressed according to veterinary guidelines and workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Foot rot in farm animals is identified and treated according with basic veterinary guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Foot dipping in a footbath, foot dip or compound is carried out according to veterinary guidelines and workplace procedures.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.

  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
