PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
i) To provide a National Certificate for persons driving vehicles, carrying Freight or Passengers, for commercial purposes;
ii) To enhance the employment prospects and marketable skills of drivers;
iii) To enhance the professional status of drivers of commercial vehicles by awarding a formal qualification in recognition of their professional competence;
iv) To address the Industry`s requirement for Drivers to have employable skills beyond that of a basic Driving License and Professional Driving Permit.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
The learner must demonstrate the ability to obtain and communicate Transport Operational Information; foster and maintain relations with role players and drive a vehicle conveying a specific freight commodity or category of passengers; in a manner that takes cognisance of the Legislative & Regulatory context of Road Transport Operations; as well as sound business principles.
The learner must be able to adapt, make decisions and solve problems, in order to apply these competencies in a variety of context.

Each of the CCFO`s are integrated within the unit standards, comprising the qualification.

Notes on the qualification design:

1. Conveyance of Freight:
All Fundamental and Core Units must be completed as well as `Convey general freight` and any three Electives.

2. Commuter or Long Distance Qualification:
All Fundamental and Core Units must be completed as well as a combination of Electives.

3. Tour Coach Qualification:
All Fundamental and Core Units must be completed as well as a combination of Electives.


Range Statements:
  • The certificate is aimed at persons wishing to work in the commercial Road Transport Industry. They could be:
    i) Persons entering the Field;
    ii) Persons already working in the Field, in a driving capacity;
    iii) Persons already working in the field in a non-driving capacity;
    iv) Self employed persons within the Field.
  • The certificate issued must clearly state the following information:
    i) License Code;
    ii) Details of the vehicle that learner proved competence on (vehicle type, make, configuration & gearbox and retardation type for vehicles over 3,5 tons);
    iii) The titles of electives completed.
  • A learner might opt to only be assessed for certification purposes, on the type of vehicle used within his/her own context. Should the learner be assessed and declared competent on more vehicle types or codes, these will be indicated on the certificate issued. No additional credits will be accumulated.
