PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Learner will be capable of:

Loading; unloading and conveying livestock on vehicles, in accordance with Legislation and the relevant regulation. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
What the Learner should know and be able to do, before starting this unit:
  • ABET Level IV English literacy
  • ABET Level II Numeracy
  • Learner will have achieved:
    i) Either 'Operate a Rigid Vehicle' or 'Operate a Vehicle Combination' depending on the type of vehicle used within the learner's context.
    ii) 'Convey General Freight'.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Transport animals in cargo space, according to regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Animals are transported in a cargo space designed or prepared to meet the requirements for transport of animals. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements refer to: i) floor space, ii) floor construction, iii) partitioning, iv) side rails, v) height between decks, vi) unloading openings.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Group animals according to regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Incompatible animals are transported in separate vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Aggressive animals are physically separated from other animals during transport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Consideration is given to different size of livestock, so as to prevent larger animals injuring smaller animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Fractious animals are tied up or restrained in a manner that will safeguard them against unnecessary discomfort or injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Temperament as well as special requirements for the type of livestock conveyed, are explained.

    Inspect animals during transportation, according to regulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Well being of animals is monitored at regular intervals and where discomfort is noticed, all possible steps to provide relief, are taken. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Load and unload animals, according to regulation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Animals are loaded and off-loaded at a safe and suitable loading platform, which is free of any object, which might cause injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Loading and off-loading is done with the minimum noise, physical handling and stressing in general. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Feed animals according to regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Animals to be transported are given sufficient and suitable drinking water and feed preceding loading and transport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Animals are given suitable feed and water on arrival at their destination. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Take care of animals' effects, whilst driving. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Driving style is adapted in order to prevent animal discomfort/injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Animals are rested as frequently as necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The dispatch is planned to allow animals to reach their destination as speedily as possible. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7 
    Deal with the emergency situations, according to regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Any delay, accident or injury to the animals during transport, is timeously reported to the appropriate authorities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 8 
    Complete and carry documentation, as per regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Each consignment of animals is accompanied by the necessary documentation, as required by legislation. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation and moderation process and criteria to be established by the relevant Education Training Quality Assurer. 

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    The Learner will be able to explain and understand:

    1. "Code of Practice for the Transport and Handling of Animals", specifically with regard to:
  • Requirements for the cargo space in which animals are transported.
  • Incompatible animals.
  • Regulations for transport of aggressive animals.
  • Regulations for transport of pregnant animals.
  • Regulations for the tying up of fractious animals.
  • Procedure in case of delay, accident, or injury/sickness of animals, during transport.
  • Loading and off-loading procedures.
  • Documentation required.
  • The inspection of animals during transportation.

    2. Knowledge of the temperament as well as any special requirements for the type of livestock conveyed.

    Understand the world as a set of related systems, (in respect of the influence of different environments and weather conditions, on livestock).
