PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
A person acquiring this qualification will be able have the basis to commence a technical career in the chemical and related industries. As such it will contribute to the full development of the learner with in the processing environment by providing recognition, facilitating mobility and transportability with in the field of manufacturing and assembly and other fields where the same attributes are needed. The knowledge , understanding and skill demonstrated within this qualification are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the

Range

The basis provided for a technical career is
  • Understanding of the purpose and objectives of the industry and operations within the industry
  • Appreciation of the technology that enables the industry to function
  • Knowledge of quality, safety, health and environment as applicable in a chemical or process operation
  • Skills that enable a person to enjoy working and to perform well in a highly technical environment

    Rationale

The chemical industry offers many and varied opportunities for technical careers. A sound foundation of knowledge and an understanding of the industry is an effective start to such a career.

This qualification provides the underpinning knowledge and skill together with recognition, for people aspiring to use this opportunity. A good basis makes further learning efficient and enjoyable which is desirable when the learning will take place in a very demanding working environment.

The knowledge and skill specified is common to all chemical and many other process related industries Therefore this qualification enables the learner to move to alternative sub fields and a variety of career paths at early in a career to meet personal requirements as they develop and to fill the employment opportunities available in the sector.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The following learning is assumed to be in place:
  • Mathematical Literacy at ABET 3 or equivalent.
  • Language, Literacy and Communications at ABET 3 or equivalent

    Recognition of prior learning

It is envisaged that this qualification will often be achieved wholly or in part through recognition of prior learning.
Evidence can be presented in a variety of forms, including international or previous local qualifications, reports, testimonials mentioning functions performed, work records, portfolios, videos of practice and performance records. All such evidence should be judged according to the general principles of assessment.

  • RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING?

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
Exit level outcome 1 Know and understand the technical features of a chemical operation

Exit level outcome 2 Live and work in an environment where technology is applied.

    Critical cross-field outcomes

The following critical cross-field outcomes are addressed through the individual specified unit standards and the combination of unit standards.
    a) Identifying and solving problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made with respect to planning ones career, planning ones life-style and executing work in the (chemical) industry
    b) working effectively with others as a member of a member of a production or manufacturing team. The demonstrated knowledge and skill may also be applied beyond the learning environment in other organizations and the community
    c) organizing and managing oneself and one`s activities responsibly and effectively with respect to learning, life-style and work
    d) collecting, analysing, organizing and critically evaluating information in the context of work and learning
    e) communicating effectively using visual, mathematical and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written persuasion as part of one`s work and the learning process
    f) using science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others when executing and reviewing one`s work
    g) demonstrating an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognizing that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation - through the application of the learning at work as applied in the workplace.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    1.
  • The purpose of a chemical operation is described in terms of needs of the owners, employees and society
  • Technology applicable to the chemical operation is explained in scientific language
  • Significance and practice regarding safety, health and the environment with reference to application at a workplace is explained and applied in accordance with site requirements
  • The impact of quality is explained with reference to the organization, customers and employees
  • Contribution is made to the activities in a chemical operation as a team member

    2.
  • Work as a team member in a process environment
  • Use financial and social systems available in the working and living environment as applicable to personal requirements

    Integrated Assessment

For award of this qualification or an exit level outcome, a candidate must be assessed against assessment criteria for each standard. Most of the assessment criteria of separate unit standards and the associated critical cross-field outcomes are interrelated. This feature must be included through integration of assessment for each standard, exit level outcome and the whole qualification. This includes the application of knowledge learnt in the workplace where the learning is undertaken.
This integrated assessment is applicable to both assessment during and on completion of learning, and to assessment of evidence submitted for the purpose of recognition of prior learning (RPL).

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
This qualification and the component unit standards have been compared with similar qualifications from the following countries:
United Kingdom - This qualification is comparable with the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) at level 1 in process manufacture, process operations (chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS
This qualification is intended facilitate learning at NQF Level 2 and beyond.
It provides a basis for learning in a variety of industries and for variet careers including process operations, chemical and related manufacturing, laboratory analysis and engineering in a process environment

    MODERATION OPTIONS
Moderation will be carried out in accordance with the mechanisms specified by CHIETA.

Alternative criteria, which may be or become appropriate, will be acceptable provided that these are agreed to in writing by the CHIETA prior to commencement of the moderation process and that they comply with the ETQA regulations (RSA, 1998b) and in Criteria and Guidelines: ETQAs (SAQA, 1999).

Particular accreditation requirements related to this qualification are:
  • Adequate exposure to an appropriate workplace that ensures that the assessment confirms the application of knowledge and skill at work is met.
  • That integrative assessment of related standards is carried out. This is of particular importance when assessing the standards relating to the application of knowledge when carrying out work.

    Verification of moderation

Verification of moderation must be conducted in accordance with the requirements specified by the CHIETA.

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

  • A subject matter expert.
  • Registered by the ETDP SETA or a provider accredited by the ETDP SETA after achieving competency against the assessor Unit Standards.
  • Registered as a constituent assessor by the CHIETA.
  • Administered, advised and coached by a Constituent Moderator

  • NOTES
This qualification has been replaced by qualification 58514, which is "General Education and Training Certificate: Chemical Operations", Level 1, 120 credits.

    Notes for assessors:

Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments:
  • Focus the initial assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcomes expressed in the titles of the unit standards to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. The aim is to declare the person competent in terms of the qualification purpose. Where assessment across titles or at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes. Special note of the need for integrated assessment must be taken.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the documented principles of assessment as defined.
