PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard will be useful for people who work, or intend to work, in a manufacturing and packaging environment, where they will be responsible for the lubrication of machinery.
People credited with this unit standard will be able to: Conduct a visual inspection of machinery Select lubricant and identify lubrication points Lubricate production machinery Conduct post-lubrication activities |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
People intending to learn towards this unit standard should have been awarded credits for the unit standard: "Maintain health, hygiene and safety practices" |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Inspection refers to: Look, listen, feel; use of dipstick; dipstick tubes; sight gauges; level plugs
Differences from normal equipment performance refers to cracked gearbox; seal failures, condition of components Oils - SAE, greases Lubrication devices: grease guns; measuring jugs; filler caps; funnels Protection of hands; storage; spillage; flammability and toxicity (pollution) |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Conduct a visual inspection of machinery. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. The machinery to be lubricated is checked for isolation and lock out, and appropriate documentation is completed, according to Company procedures |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. All relevant personnel are informed about the intention to lubricate machinery |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. The machinery is inspected to check if lubrication is necessary, and any differences from normal equipment performance are noted and reported immediately |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Select lubricant and identify lubrication points. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1.The correct lubricant and applicator are selected for the machinery, as per the manufacturer's specifications |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Uses of various types of lubricants are explained, with due reference to friction and heat |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. The types and grades of various lubricants, frequency of use, and conditions under which each lubricant is used, are explained with reference to the machinery being lubricated |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Lubricate production machinery. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Lubrication points are identified against appropriate charts, and the selected lubrication devices are clean, fit for purpose and ready for use |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Safe handling of lubricant is described, and consequences of non-conformance to safety requirements are explained |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. Lubrication is conducted in a way that protects both machinery and operator, and is in accordance with manufacturer's specifications |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Conduct post-lubrication activities. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
1. Used consumables are disposed of in appropriate waste bins, in keeping with good housekeeping practices |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
2. Lubrication equipment is cleaned and returned to demarcated area, and lubricants are stored away |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
3. The floor surrounding the lubricated machinery is inspected, and any spillages removed |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
4. All documentation relating to lubrication is completed and signed off, as per Company policies and procedures |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
5. Relevant personnel are informed of the completion of lubrication, and a request made for the de-isolation of machinery |
