PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at people who work in or intend to work within a chemical industry in general and as applied in a specific environment.

Those learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to maintain basic safety, health and environmental requirements, pertaining to the specific site where learning takes place and the chemical industry in general.

The qualifying learner is able to:

Identify, recognise and describe safety and health statutory requirements and responsibilities
Follow and observe safety, health and environmental requirements
Implement good hygiene and housekeeping practices
Recognise and report hazardous situations 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against numeracy and literacy at ABET Level 3 or equivalent .

  • Culture includes positive attitudes, participation, co-operation, awareness, constructive communications and taking responsibility for safety, health and environmental issues
  • Lockouts include electrical lockouts, no entry lockouts and mechanical lockouts
  • Safety indicators include yellow lines, demarcation lines, (walk here), signs, (no entry, goggles, hats etc), chemical warning labels, three basic colour codes (red - danger, yellow - caution, blue - mandatory you must), locations, exits and assembly area

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes hand and foot protection, eye, ear, face and head protection and body protection
  • Personal protection and practices include the use of hairnets, removal of jewellery and avoidance of loose clothes in plant areas
