PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will provide recognition for individuals who perform or intend to perform one-to-one training on the job. Formal recognition will enhance their employability and also provide a means to identify competent trainers or coaches.
  • People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare for one-to-one training on the job;
  • Conduct training sessions;
  • Monitor and report on learner progress; and
  • Review training. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the learning area in which they will provide training. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    1. The phrase "one-to-one training on the job", sometimes also referred to as "coaching", involves a process of working alongside individual learners/employees to improve their skills in a defined area of application (task).
    2. "Task" refers to a clearly defined activity, with achievable steps requiring the application of a discreet set of skills in a particular area.
    3. For assessment against this unit standard:
  • The trainer may provide training for any "task", in any performance area, but such training should be towards some defined performance standard. The performance standard could be in the form of internal company standards or unit standards;
  • The training process should involve combinations of explanations and demonstrations of practical activities.
    4. The trainer will monitor and give feedback on learner progress against defined performance standards, but is not expected to perform the role of a registered assessor who assesses against registered standards

    Individual task performance is reviewed in relation to performance requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual learning needs are identified in relation to the review of task performance, intended learning outcomes and stakeholder objectives 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stakeholders may include but are not limited to - learners, trainer, colleagues, supervisors, management, quality assurance staff, health and safety staff.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Preparation caters for the needs and responsibilities of stakeholders, possible learning barriers, different learning styles and special needs of learners. The structure of the training plan is established in co-operation with relevant stakeholders and experts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Resources, locations, and personnel are arranged to suit intended delivery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The learning environment is arranged to meet organisational and legislative requirements for safety and accessibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Review criteria are confirmed with relevant personnel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The learner is advised of intended learning outcomes, sequence of activities, job applicability, and the assessment process, where applicable. Opportunities are provided for the learner to contribute to and enquire about the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Training sessions enable the learner to understand the broader context and importance of the task. The sessions contribute towards the principle of life-long learning within a positive learning environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Training is outcomes-directed, and includes appropriate and effective explanations, demonstrations, practice and review as required to enable learning to take place. The learner is directed towards helpful resources as required to promote understanding and learning transfer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Language medium and level is appropriate to the learner and demands of the task, and is consistent with industry usage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The demonstrated steps and explanation sequence meets learner needs in terms of pace and logic of structure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Opportunities for practice are sufficient to ensure learner competence is achieved in terms of the defined outcomes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Training is carried out in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements include resource usage, health and safety requirements and organisational quality assurance requirements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The training approach provides opportunities to monitor learner's progress and understanding of the task. Where necessary, modifications are made to the training approach to ensure the learner's needs are addressed.

    Performance is monitored in terms of agreed performance outcomes.

    Feedback is constructive and relevant to the task, to the learner and to the intended performance outcomes. Where required, feedback helps the learner to identify weaknesses and determine steps to address such weaknesses.

    Reports meet organisational quality assurance requirements in terms of content, format and distribution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Recommendations regarding learner's readiness for formal assessment are consistent with findings of the learner's progress and are made in line with organisational policies and procedures.

    The review reveals strengths and weaknesses of the planning, preparation, implementation and feedback components of the training.

    Review includes useful recommendations for improvement in future planning and training.

    1. Assessors for this unit standard must be registered with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Providers of learning towards this unit standard must be accredited through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures
