PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) or learning towards occupational qualifications at Level 5. It will be useful for bridging courses and extended programmes to equip learners with the competencies that they need to operate in Higher Education. It will also be useful for teachers and trainers who wish to enhance their own study skills in order to teach study skills in schooling, FET Institutions and Providers of Occupational Qualifications.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing own abilities and lifestyle.
  • Demonstrating different methods of thinking.
  • Applying knowledge of learning theories and study techniques to develop a personal study methodology.
  • Synthesising information from a variety of sources. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 4.

    The importance of a balanced lifestyle is explained with reference to wellness and productivity.

    A balanced lifestyle includes, but is not limited to, physical, health, financial, career, social, cultural, spiritual, ethical, family, home and educational aspects.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Own abilities and interests are analysed to determine strengths and weaknesses and their implications for learning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Activities in own life are prioritised to enable a balance lifestyle and to accommodate an effective study programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A study schedule is planned to optimise the use of time and updated to accommodate unforeseen changes.

    Demonstrate different methods of thinking.

    Techniques for lateral thinking are explored and an indication is given of when creative thinking is appropriate.

    Inductive or deductive thinking is applied to solve a problem.

    Critical thinking techniques are applied to explore or debate an issue or solve a problem.

    Techniques or skills to enhance comprehension are applied to interrogate a text. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Comprehension skills/techniques include, but are not limited to literal comprehension (recognition and recall of details, main ideas, sequence, cause and effect, comparison), reorganization (classification, outlining, summarizing, synthesizing), inferential comprehension (supporting details, main ideas, sequence, comparisons, cause and effect relationships, predicting outcomes), evaluation ( judgements of reality or fantasy, fact or opinion, adequacy and validity, appropriateness, worth, desirability and acceptability) and appreciation.

    Information is processed from a variety of sources and synthesised with due regard for audience and purpose.
