US ID Unit Standard Title Pre-2009 NQF Level NQF Level Credits Replacement Status
10198  Demonstrate a knowledge of exercise and fitness principle  Level 4  NQF Level 04

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to utilize their knowledge to identify and explain safe and effective movement in the context of physical activity and exercise conditioning. Achievement of this unit standard will provide the learner with a theoretical and a basic applied knowledge of musculo skeletal anatomy in the context of physical activity.

In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:
  • Identify the anatomical structures of the human body.
  • Explain the movements of the joints, bones and muscles.
  • Describe common exercise and their related movement.
  • Identify the physiological systems of the human body.

On completion of this unit standard the learner should be ready to develop learning in further, more complex processes related to anatomy and physiology in exercise training.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
A learner undertaking this unit standard is assumed to already have:
  • Demonstrated competence against relevant unit standards at NQF level 3 either through a previous qualification or through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which assesses workplace-based experiential learning.
  • Demonstrated competence in Language and Communication skills at NQF level 3 or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Range statements are either explicitly reflected or implied in the specific outcomes and assessment criteria of this unit standard.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify the anatomical structures of the human body.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The names of the bones of the apendicular and axial skeleton are provided to enable correct anatomical labelling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The muscles responsible for movement at each joint are named according to their correct anatomical term.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain the movements of the joints, bones and muscles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The different types of joints are identified and their actions noted in relation to the ranges of movement of joints.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The major muscles are identified together with their actions in order to explain their involvement in movement.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Describe common exercise and their related movement.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Exercises are named and described according to accepted terms used in exercise science.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Exercises can include but are not limited to movements that involve all the joints of the body.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Terms are utilized that describe movements of the joints.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Includes but is not limited to: Flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, circumduction, pronation, supination, medial, lateral, horizontal.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Movement is explained in terms of the planes of movement.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Identify the physiological systems of the human body.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The major physiological systems affected by exercise training are defined.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Includes, but not limited to, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, neurological, muscular, and skeletal.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The acute physiological responses and chronic adaptations to exercise are identified for each of the physiological system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The energy systems are identified that underpin specific exercises or activities.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard, or assessing this unit standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
The qualifying learner is able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
  • Bones, muscles of the body.
  • Anatomical terminology.
  • Human movement terminology.
  • Movements and function of different muscles in human movement.
  • Exercise and movement terms.
  • The physiological systems and their role in exercise training.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Problem solving is involved when the energy systems are identified that underpin specific exercises or activities.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use of science and technology is required when exercises are named and described according to accepted terms used in exercise science.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Inter-relatedness of systems is evidenced when the different types of joints are identified and their actions noted in relation to the ranges of movement of joints.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
