Learners who have achieved this unit standard are capable of applying and describing the procedures concerning the transportation and the conveyance of prisoners, transporting and safe keeping of prisoners while under their immediate control.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Plan the transport of prisoners.
  • Handle a prisoner during transportation.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the safety in society sector and more specifically within the policing discipline by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the safety in society environment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons in the safety in society environment concerning the transport of detainees.

    Documentation related to the need to transport prisoners is analysed in terms of itsuses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Modes of transport are explained with examples specific to the transportation of prisoners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons why means of transport must be inspected before use is explained in order to identify deviations in safety and security precautions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The route for transportation and stopping points are planned with regard to costs and safety and security. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Handle a prisoner during transportation.

    Handling includes the measures before, during and after transportation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of a body receipt is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Search and inspection procedures to be conducted while handling a prisoner during transportation are explained in line with current requirements and legal prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods of securing a prisoner are described according to organisational prescripts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The concept of "taken in possession" is explained with reference to current legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Placement of the prisoner in the vehicle is determined in order to meet safety and security requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Methods to prevent injuries to prisoners during transportation are analysed with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Factors which will contribute to the humane treatment of the prisoner during transportation are explained with examples.

    Factors include but is not limited to: meals, rest stops etc.

    Hand over procedures are explained according to departmental procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Candidates are assessed against these assessment criteria. An assessor observes currently employed candidates carrying out their normal work duties. They may also be asked to carry out simulated tasks and to answer written and/or oral questions. Candidates studying towards a Unit Standard, and who are not currently employed, will also be assessed using variety of assessment tools.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
