PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to understand the components of the agricultural sector and the term production, understand the basic functions of the production process and the production factors used in the production process in an agri-business. In addition they will be well positioned to extend their learning and practice into other areas of agriculture benefiting the industry in terms of efficiency.

Learners will understand the importance of the application of business principles in agricultural production.

They will be able to operate farming practices as businesses and will gain the knowledge and skills to move from a subsistence orientation to an economic orientation in agriculture. Farmers will gain the knowledge and skills to access mainstream agriculture through a business-orientated approach to agriculture.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Describe the rudiments and components of the agricultural production environment. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
Agricultural environments include but are not limited to those found on farms, feedlots, aqua cultural facilities, ranges, game farms and agri-tourist attractions, horticultural production facilities such as vegetable, fruit, nut and seed production, plant nurseries and the like, as applicable to the context of operation.

Components include but are not limited to primary and secondary input components, resource facilities, production, processing and marketing facilities.

General knowledge about the Agricultural production sector is demonstrated. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
Knowledge on the historical, demographic and geographic extent of the Agricultural sector is demonstrated.

Knowledge about the various types of production facility within Agriculture is demonstrated. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
Production facilities include but are not limited to plant and plant product production and animal and animal product production facilities.
 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
Identify the components and purposes of basic production systems. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
Production systems include but are not limited to systems producing animals and plants and their products, as relevant to the context of operation. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
The ability to identify and name different inputs applied in an agri-production process with reference to basic specific systems is shown. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
Inputs refer to but are not limited to all the input factors (seed, fertiliser, feed, medicine, climate, soil, water, skills, finances, etc.) as applied in the production process.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
An understanding of importance of responsible and educated usage of production inputs is demonstrated. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
Responsible usage refers to but is not limited to safe usage, prevention of wastages and prevention of direct or indirect dangers.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
Knowledge of and adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and warning signs is demonstrated. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
Warning signs include but are not limited to those governing the usage of chemicals, machinery, electricity, fire and equipment.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
Knowledge of the basic processing component of agricultural production systems is demonstrated. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
Knowledge of the basic outputs or products produced by agricultural production systems is demonstrated. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
Identify basic production factors used in the agricultural production process. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
Production refers to but is not limited to the activities relating to the actual physical transformation of materials or production means into a meaningful product.

The term production is understood and defined. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
The definition should include the entire process, from the application of inputs to the final product (Objective, Place, Sequence) Human resources, Method (such as organic, manually, mechanically), financial resources, etc.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
The interaction between inputs and outputs is understood and interpreted. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
The transformation / conversion process is understood. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
Conversion process refers to but is not limited to the Inputs (resources) - Process (transformation) - Outputs - Feedback loop.

The activities of elementary production management are understood. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
Activities include but are not limited to activities such as choices of product range, production process, equipment, size of process, location, climate, soil, product demand, work plan, quality, maintaining equipment and the output.

Define the production and conversion process in terms of an agricultural business environment.

Agricultural business includes basic factors related to Personnel, Public Relations, finances, production, marketing and procurement.

The Agricultural production process in terms of business concepts is described.

Each production and conversion component in terms of business concepts is described. 


UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established assessment principles.

It will be necessary to develop assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the qualifying learners are working. These activities and tools may include an appropriate combination of self-assessment and peer assessment, formative and summative assessment, portfolios and observations etc.

The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge are assessed.

The specific outcomes must be assessed through observation of performance. Supporting evidence should be used to prove competence of specific outcomes only when they are not clearly seen in the actual performance.

Essential embedded knowledge must be assessed in its own right, through oral or written evidence and cannot be assessed only by being observed.

The specific outcomes and essential embedded knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge but is unable to perform the specific outcomes, they should not be assessed as competent. Similarly, if a qualifying learner is able to perform the specific outcomes but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, then thy should not be assessed as competent.

Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.

Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
