PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to wash, organize and control the washing process using conventional rotary washing machines and washer-extractor washing equipment.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Plan and prepare to wash a laundry batch.
  • Wash laundry items.
  • Perform end of washing procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or the equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare to wash a laundry batch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The care labels and symbols on laundry items are interpreted, stating the impact on the washing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of fibres and fabrics are described in terms of their reaction and sensitivity to chemicals, mechanical action and temperature and the washing and drying process to be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Laundry machine is prepared in accordance with laundry to be washed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Chemicals, detergents and programmes are selected in accordance with the laundry to be washed, the type and degree of soiling and the specific machinery to be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The work is planned according to worksite procedure and priority.

    Wash laundry items. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The washing machine is loaded with items to be washed according to manufacturer's weight load instructions and the type of article to be processed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct programme is chosen for each washing machine used taking consideration of how the wash process operates, the type of textile to be washed, the temperature to be used, the types of chemicals used and time of the wash and rinse process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The washing machinery is operated in accordance with worksite procedures and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Manually operated wash processes are controlled to ensure optimal performance and operator safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Automatically controlled processes (via PLC or programmable card) are observed to ensure all process parameters are achieved. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A malfunctioning washing machine is stopped and the malfunction reported in accordance with worksite procedures and manufacturer's instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform end of wash procedures.

    Washed items are checked for compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Unsatisfactory items are removed and redirected in accordance with worksite procedures.

    Faulty equipment is reported according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Defects or faults identified relating to the operation of the washing machine, services and supplies or with the operation of the wash process are reported according to work site procedures.

    Waste is disposed of in accordance with worksite procedures and environmental regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Routine maintenance of washing machine is done according to the manufacturer's instructions, preventative maintenance and worksite procedures.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
