PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard is for persons who work within the laundry industry and are tasked with ironing laundry using ironers or calenders. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to prepare and process flat work through ironers or calenders.

Qualifying learners are able to:

Prepare flatwork for calendaring.

Finish flatwork.

Perform end of finishing flatwork procedures.

It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or the equivalent.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Prepare flatwork for calendaring.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The care labels and symbols on laundry items are explained in terms of the impact of flatwork finishing process on the items.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The types of fibres and fabrics are described in terms of their reaction to heat and pressure and how they must be dealt with during the flatwork finishing process.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The safety precautions and operational procedures when operating calenders or ironers and ancillary feeding and folding machinery is explained in terms of employee safety.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Calender or ironer speeds and setting are explained in terms of the effect on the textile finish by fibre types, textile weights, textile dampness and different classifications being processed.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

Calenders or ironers are adjusted and checked to ensure they are safe and ready for use and all emergency stop buttons and interlock systems are functioning correctly.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6

Calender or ironer beds are waxed according to the workplace procedures and manufacturers' instructions and all procedures and precautions understood relating to the handling and storage of the wax sheet.

Items are checked for stains, marks and tears and any unsatisfactory items are redirected to the appropriate location.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Items are loaded onto feeder or fed directly onto the calender feed-bands at the specified rate.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Machines are operated according to manufacturer's instructions and worksite procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Malfunctioning calenders and ancillary feeding or folding equipment are stopped in accordance with worksite procedures and manufacturer's instructions and reported according to work site procedures.

Perform end of finishing flatwork procedures.

Finished items are inspected and unsatisfactory items are removed and redirected in accordance with worksite procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Finished items are passed on for packing and dispatch according to worksite procedure.

Faulty equipment is reported according to worksite procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Routine maintenance of calenders or ironer's feeders and folders is implemented according to the manufacturer's instructions, preventative maintenance and worksite procedures.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.

Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.

Definition of terms within this unit standard:

Calender/Ironer - Any machinery designed to dry and impart a smooth finish to flat textiles by passing the textile over a heated surface that squeezes the textile between a roll or rollers and the heated metal surface(s) in which the roll(ers) rotate.

Feeder - Any machinery or equipment designed to assist the operator in presenting the items to be finished to the calender/Ironer feed-bands.

Feed-bands - A layer of individual canvas (or similar fabric) strips that provide a moving platform to feed the articles to be finished into the Calender/Ironer.

Folder - An automatic or semi automatic machine that fully or partially folds finished items for ease of handling and presentation after undergoing the finishing process on the calender/Ironer.

Waxing - The process of applying wax to the heated metal bed(s) of the calender/Ironer in order to reduce the friction between the rolls and heated metal chests as well as reduce the risk of corrosion.

Calender/Ironer clothing - A thick resilient fabric that is attached to the calender/Ironer rolls to assist in both the drying process as well as draw/pull the articles undergoing the finishing process through the Calender/Ironer.
