This unit standard is required by people working in the manufacturing environment who need to understand the role of sales and operations planning, and be able to use quantitative forecasting methods and aggregate planning processes.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:

    Sales and operations planning is defined in line with Operations Management Body of Knowledge (OMBOK). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The position of sales and operations planning in the MRPII hierarchy is explained correctly using a flow diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The sales and operations planning process is discussed using workplace data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The managerial inputs to the sales and operations planning process are described according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Various planning strategies are evaluated using workplace data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Capacity strategies are explained using relevant examples from industry.

    Evaluate quantitative forecasting methods.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Quantitative forecasting techniques are compared to qualitative forecasting techniques using workplace examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of quantitative forecasting in the demand management process is critiqued using workplace data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The methods of preparing a forecast are explained using workplace data to calculate a forecast. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Measures of forecast error are calculated using raw workplace data. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measures include but are not limited to bias, (write in full first) MAD and standard deviation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The process of tracking forecast error and identification of any significant deviations are examined using workplace data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The difference between forecast demand and actual demand are explained critically in terms of their effect on the level of customer service offered by a company.

    Explain and apply the aggregate planning process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The position of aggregate planning in the MRPII hierarchy is examined using a flow diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The characteristics of aggregate planning are discussed differentiating between aggregate planning in a manufacturing environment and in a service environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The components of aggregate planning are described and the process of compiling an aggregate plan is explained according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The level and chase strategies of preparing an aggregate plan are explained according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An aggregate plan is prepared and costs determined using different planning strategies. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Planning strategies include but are not limited to level planning strategy, chase planning strategy, chase planning strategy with overtime and idle time, subcontracting planning strategy, mixed planning strategy.

    A number of alternative planning strategies are presented considering advantages and disadvantages of each using examples.

    The process of matching the aggregate plan with available resources is described according to procedures.
