PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who have to apply advanced defensive driving skills in the execution of their daily tasks.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply knowledge related to vehicle dynamics to reduce driving risk.
  • Demonstrate techniques used to avoid accidents and maintain control.
  • Apply techniques to improve driving skills and maintain safety at all times. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication skills at NQF Level 4.
  • Knowledge about traffic regulations.
  • Meet the requirements to obtain a valid driving licence for a motor vehicle. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to individuals who are required to perform advanced defensive driving under the following conditions:
  • Variable lighting and visibility conditions.
  • Front or rear wheel driven vehicles.
  • Code B class vehicles.
  • Different road conditions (wet and dry).
  • Different transmission systems.

    The various mechanical systems influencing vehicle driving are defined and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Mechanical systems refer to:
  • Clutch, Brake, Accelerator, gearbox, steering and shock absorber.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The advantages and disadvantages of airbags, seat belts, braking and stability control systems are identified and explained according to manufactures specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The techniques of dealing with front and rear run flats are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Pavement climbing is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The pre-trip inspection points are identified and inspected in accordance with the K53 system.

  • Interior and Exterior inspection of a vehicle.

    The application of a system of driving principles are demonstrated during a practical driving test.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Emergency lane-change to avoid an obstacle is demonstrated at an average speed of 60 km/h and an object distance within 50 meters. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Techniques demonstrated in a realistic but safe and controlled simulation/environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Breaking techniques are demonstrated with a vehicle coming to a total standstill within 50m under various conditions.

  • Breaking techniques refer to:
    > Cadence/pulse breaking.
    > Threshold braking also known as limit braking.

    > Wet/gravel surface driving at 60km/h.
    > Dry surface driving at 100km/h.

    Steering and braking control is demonstrated during conditions of reduced visibility.

    Skid control is demonstrated by identifying and applying the correcting sequence/techniques to regain control on different road surfaces.

    The advantages and disadvantages of apex driving are identified and explained.

  • Blind apex situation.
  • Open apex situation.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Candidates are assessed against these assessment criteria. An assessor will use suitable assessment methods to assess the candidates in accordance with the principles of assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
