PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is designed for people who wish to further their career in the field of switchgear assembly manufacturing.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Isolate, modify, test, and re-power switchgear assemblies.
  • Document switchgear assembly modifications. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following competencies are assumed:
  • Communication and Literacy, at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy, at NQF Level 3.

    In addition, learners are assumed to have basic hand tools skills.

    This assumption forms the basis for the allocation of credits for this unit standard. If a learner does not have such experience or qualifications, the learning time will be increased. The allocation of credits is also based on the assumption that the learner will be following a learning programme which integrates the required unit standards. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • All practical work must meet documented organisational procedures for personal, product, and work site safety requirements.
  • For the purpose of this unit standard, the term switchgear assembly refers to low and medium voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, of rated voltage up to and including 32 000 V.
  • The term assemble refers to the mechanical assembly of the switchgear assembly, including the mounting of all switchgear and controlgear components and cable ducts, and includes the installation and termination of cables and wires.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All dependent circuits and equipment are identified prior to de-powering the switchgear assembly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Request permission to work in accordance with organisational policy and procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legal documentation complied with.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Permission to de-power the board has been obtained from the responsible authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Power is switched off to eliminate all live circuits from the board. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Voltage and current levels on the board are verified to confirm that the switchgear assembly is electrically isolated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Modify and test switchgear assemblies.

    Field connections disturbed during modifications are securely re-established to their dependent circuits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The safety of dependent equipment and users is verified prior to re-powering the system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Permission to re-power the board is obtained from the responsible authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Re-powering the switchgear assembly and dependent circuits is completed using a safe and efficient sequence of steps, and in accordance with site procedures.

    Document switchgear assembly modifications.

    The equipment service record is updated to record the work carried out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Final test results are recorded according to organisational requirements.

    A Certificate of Compliance is obtained for additions to the switchgear assembly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Permision to work documentation is completed as per organisational policy and procedure.

    Impractical fabrication requirements on drawings are detailed and reported to authoritative person.

    Fabrication options are offered to overcome a perceived fabrication difficulty.

    Fabrication difficulty affecting safety and/or function are documented in a manner that permits investigation and remedy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Authority is obtained for variation to specifications.

    Verify correctness of switchgear assembly.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All components are confirmed to be installed as indicated on the drawings, subject to authorized variations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dimensions of switchgear assemblies are in accordance with specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Electrical connections on the assembly are marked to show torque settings at specified tensions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Transportation splits are as required by the general arrangement drawing. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of a relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), which has jurisdiction over this field of learning. The policies and procedures of the relevant ETQA will also determine:
    > How the assessment is moderated.
    > How a learner can appeal against the outcome of the assessment.
  • Any institution or company which offers learning to achieve the purpose of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA. The integrated assessment should be based on a summative assessment guide. The guide will specify how the assessor will assess different aspects of the performance and will include:
    > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes.
    > Observing and listening to the learner at work, both in primary activities as well as in other interactions, or in relevant simulations.
    > Asking questions and initiating short discussions to test understanding and to verify other evidence.
    > Looking at records and reports.
    > Formative assessment.
  • Assessment of competence for this unit standard is based on experience acquired by the learner in the workplace, within the particular machining context. The assessment process should cover the explicit tasks required for the unit standard as well as the understanding of the concepts and principles that underpin the process of manufacturing switchgear assemblies.
  • The assessment process should also establish how the learning process has advanced the Critical Cross-field Outcomes.
  • The learner may choose in which language he/she wants to be assessed. This should be established as part of a process of preparing the learner for assessment and familiarizing the learner with the approach being taken.
  • Assessors should also evaluate evidence that the learner has been performing consistently over a period of time.
  • Assessment criteria of the type results achieved are critical to this unit standard and must be achieved.
  • The assessment for this unit standard can be done in conjunction with the assessment of other unit standards related to a qualification, and in conjunction with the assessment for the qualification as a whole.
