In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise. |
This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. |
PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is for people engaged in the manufacture of electric switchgear assemblies, and is concerned with the skill of fabricating and installing busbars to given specifications. The competency specified by this unit standard is essential for artisanship certification purposes.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: Make single bends in busbars to a plan, achieve specified busbar sets, punch or drill holes in busbars, and install busbars and bracing systems. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
The following competencies are assumed:
In addition, learners are assumed to have basic hand tools skills at NQF Level 2. This assumption forms the basis for the allocation of credits for this unit standard. If a learner does not have such experience or qualifications, the learning time will be increased. The allocation of credits is also based on the assumption that the learner will be following a learning programme which integrates the required unit standards. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Make single bends in busbars as per mechanical drawings. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Bending of busbars is achieved using bending tools in a safe manner. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Bending of busbars to the required angle is achieved without loss of mechanical or electrical integrity. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Busbar bending radii are consistent and show efficient use of materials. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Achieve specified busbar sets. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Two angles and one distance between angles, on each of two busbars. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Busbars are bent to specified sets. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Accurate bending of busbars is demonstrated by close nesting of the two busbars on first attempt. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Punch or drill holes in busbars. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Holes are either punched or drilled in busbars consistent with requirements of the drawing. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Requirements: Diameter, position. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Busbar holes are created in a consistent and safe manner. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Edges of holes are reamed to remove all burrs. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Install busbars and bracing systems. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Busbar support systems are installed according to job specification. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Busbars are positioned to achieve specified clearances and creepage distance. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Busbars are jointed according to industry practice and to meet job specification and applicable regulations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Phase rotation and colour coding of busbars complies with drawing specifications. |
UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS |
> How the assessment is moderated. >How a learner can appeal against the outcome of the assessment. > Evaluating evidence in a portfolio of evidence, particularly projects which integrate various aspects of the unit standard and which demonstrate the integration of knowledge, skills and values, and the development of the critical outcomes. > Observing and listening to the learner at work, both in primary activities as well as in other interactions, or in relevant simulations. > Asking questions and initiating short discussions to test understanding and to verify other evidence. > Looking at records and reports. > Formative assessment. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
