PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify common plants by their scientific names.
  • Describe the characteristics of the common plants.
  • Detail the environmental requirements of the common plants.
  • Recognize any specific needs of the common plants.
  • Utilize knowledge of common plants to successfully establish and maintain these in the landscape. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Learner to identify plants that are commonly grown in the region. At least 50 plants (a mix of trees, shrubs, climbers, groundcovers, herbaceous plants and annuals) to be identified by their scientific names. Although a variety of plant types (trees, shrubs, climbers, annuals, herbaceous perennials, groundcovers etc) should be identified, local circumstances may dictate an emphasis on certain groups.

    Describe the characteristics and growth requirements of trees commonly found in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ten distinctly different trees, commonly found in the workplace, are identified by genus and species or variety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The particular form and growth habits of each tree are defined according to their diagnostic indicators. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The differences between deciduous and evergreen trees are described in terms of the distinctive features and dormancy habits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The characteristic features that distinguish each tree are described in terms of the colour, size and shape of their leaves, flowers and fruit.

    The particular needs of the trees, when used in a typical landscape, are explained in context of their preferred soil types and drainage requirements.
