PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons required to provide intervention to community members of similar cultural background and mother tongue and who have disabilities and or chronic diseases that prevent them from moving around. The unit standard will enable the person to help prevent a client's joints from becoming stiff and deformed, muscles from becoming weak, stiff and painful and help the client move around during everyday activities.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining why movement is important and the problems associated with lack of movement.
  • Preventing deformity, mobility, muscular and joint pain problems.
  • Evaluating a client's mobility to determine a programme to support mobility and reduce pain.
  • Implementing a mobility programme for a client.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the importance of movement and the problems associated with lack of movement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fundamental anatomy and physiology of musculo-skeletal and nervous systems are explained in relation to the normal accepted functions of muscles, joints and the nervous system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of movement is explained in relation to the possibility of joint and muscle deterioration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The stages of progression of HIV/AIDS and the role of movement at each stage is described in basic terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The causes of immobility are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Causes include but are not limited to fractures, weakness, spasticity, lack of use.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prevent deformity, immobility, muscular and joint pain problems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ways of changing positions of the client to prevent deformity are described and demonstrated with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The methods of teaching a client different positions for day and night to prevent deformity are demonstrated with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of passive movements for clients with various problems are discussed with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Problems include but are not limited to movement and mobility problems, lack of energy, poor sensation/feeling.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Passive movements for various deformities or immobility are demonstrated and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Assistance is given to a client suffering from joint or muscle pain by identifying the causes and implementing suitable methods of treatment with required precautions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Treatments include but are not limited to rest, ice, compression, elevation and exercise (RICEE).
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Evaluate a client's mobility to determine a programme to support mobility and reduce pain. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ways of evaluating a client's mobility are identified and explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Possible and actual problems are listed in relation to the source and proposed solutions for improving mobility and reducing pain are discussed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The test for mobility is demonstrated in line with WHO criteria. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Implement a mobility programme for a client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An appropriate mobility programme is determined in line with client evaluation to make own home accessible. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Creating accessibility in the home includes but is not limited to determining problems of accessibility, assisting the client and significant others to remove obstacles, discussing ways to make the community more accessible.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A client and significant others are taught active and/or passive exercises to increase mobility, prevent deformities and reduce pain. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    An active and/or passive exercise programme includes but is not limited to precautions when doing the exercises, the role of the client's significant others in assisting the client in exercises, the use of exercises for different problems including moving and being bedridden, lack of energy, poor sensation/feeling.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A client is assisted in preventing bedsores by identifying likely or possible causes and implementing measures and to prevent them developing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Clients are taught how to move during everyday activities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Everyday activities Include but are not limited to getting in and out of bed/wheelchair, on/off chairs, going up and down stairs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The need for a mobility aid is identified, the client is taught how and when to use it and how to identify and overcome deficiencies in the aid. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Mobility aids include but are not limited to wheel chairs, walking frames, helpers, parallel bars, crutches, a stick.
