PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
On completion of this Unit Standard he learner will be able to assist clients and their significant others to manage their health status and to provide basic care under the direction of a qualified health worker for persons who require home based care.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of elementary anatomy, physiology, human development and the ageing process.
  • Identifying disease conditions and disabilities common to an identified community.
  • Assisting in the management of the client's condition and treatment.
  • Identifying when to refer the client or significant others. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 1. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Learning includes, but is not limited to, basic knowledge of the most common types of debilitating and terminal diseases, including the normal process of ageing, being able to recognise when referral is needed.

    Diseases common to the local area are named and described in terms of their type.

    Disabilities commonly found among the community members are identified and briefly described.

    A care plan for basic care and treatment is compiled in conjunction with the client and significant others.

    Clients are assisted with activities of daily living in terms of the care plan.

    The encouragement of mobility to prevent complications in terms of the care plan is described and demonstrated.

    Problems relating to the aged are described and addressed in terms of the care plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Principles of hygiene, safe handling and disposal of waste are applied according to universal precautions.

    Potential physical dangers are identified and removed or modified in terms of creating a safe environment for the client.

    Identify when to refer the client or significant others.
