PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering, Generation, Distribution, Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Planning the installation, connection and commissioning of a wind turbine.
  • Preparing for the installation, connection and commissioning a wind turbine.
  • Installing and connecting a wind turbine.
  • Connecting the wind turbine charge regulator.
  • Commissioning a wind turbine.
  • Completing the installation, connection and commissioning of a wind turbine.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • An understanding of how the components in a photovoltaic supplied system functions.
  • An understanding of how three phase permanent magnet alternators operate.
  • An understanding of how DC generators operate.
  • The Installation of a photovoltaic supplied system.
  • The installation of batteries.
  • Relevant statutory requirements.
  • Use of relevant testing and measuring equipment and hand tools.

    Sequence of operation is interpreted and determined as per Job instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Applicable electrical drawings are correctly interpreted and selected to meet job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment and personal protective equipment is selected, inspected and checked for functionality and safety prior to commencement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety procedures related to job requirements and work site procedures are obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The wind turbine, its associated electronic control devices and battery bank and mast are identified and selected according to job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Permission is obtained to carry out task according to instructions and drawings.

    Appropriate tools are identified and selected to meet the requirements of the task according to statutory requirements.

    Work area is demarcated in accordance with work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Wind turbine, its charge regulator and mast are checked in accordance with manufacturer specifications and functional requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Work site is inspected for safety and hazards and corrective action is taken according to statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Installation area is prepared for the placing/mounting and securing the wind turbine mast and stay cables, as per job instructions, drawings and diagrams 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Install and connect a wind turbine.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate tools are selected and used correctly as per manufacturer's specifications and work site standards according to statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All personal protective equipment is used as per safety requirements and work site standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The generator and slip rings are tested for functionality in terms of desired operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The mast, gin pole, stays cables, winch, winch cable is placed in position, and all cables fastened and readied for erection in accordance with relevant safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Supply cables are connected as per manufacturer's manuals, specifications, drawings, instructions and statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The wind turbine and mast are raised into upright position and the stay wires secured and tightened as per the manufacturers specifications and relevant safety requirements.

    Connect wind turbine to charge regulator.

    Supply cable is installed, between wind turbine and charge regulator in accordance with relevant SANS requirements.

    The cable is connected to the charge regulator as per manufacturers manuals, specifications and operational requirements.

    The charge regulator is connected to the battery bank and load according to manufacturers specifications and operational requirements.
