PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to inspect, test and maintain 3-kV DC regeneration equipment in traction sub-stations in an electrical environment as well as ensuring the continuity and availability of dynamic regenerative breaking and absorption of generated electrical energy in the Rail Sector.

    The range of this unit standard may be limited to carrying out diagnostic testing and applying preventative maintenance and replacement repairs where necessary on:
  • 3-kV DC high-speed circuit breaker in traction sub-stations.
  • Applies to a voltage of 3000 volts DC.
  • 3-kV DC regeneration equipment (e.g., contactors, resistance banks, PLC control, etc.).
  • Contactors being: Electro Magnetic operated.
  • Relevant drawings, symbols and diagrams.

    The 3-kV DC regeneration equipment in traction sub-stations history and operational/maintenance records are scrutinised indicating service needs noted for attention during the routine servicing as per maintenance procedure.

    The 3-kV DC regeneration equipment in traction sub-stations defect history and operational/maintenance records can include but is not limited to fault operations, malfunction, reported problems, mechanism failures, excessive arcing damage, environmental damage (including weather), hi-pot tests, calibration tests, etc.

    The inspections on 3-kV DC regeneration equipment in traction sub-stations are carried out safely and correctly according to the maintenance check sheets, any damage or defects are identified as per manufacturer's specification, worksite operational standards and settings and company specific specifications.

    Personal protective equipment can include but is not limited to safety overalls, gloves, goggles, safety boots, dust mask, etc.

    The results of the diagnostic tests are correctly recorded to meet the job requirements.

    The maintenance and repair on 3-kV DC regeneration equipment in traction sub-stations is carried out following manufacturer's procedures and worksite instructions. This may include the disassembling or opening of parts of the equipment.

    All cleaning solvents and materials are used safely and appropriately with the correct personal safety aspects taken into consideration, during maintenance as per manufacturer's specifications and worksite standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All tools and equipment are used safely and correctly during maintenance as per manufacturers specifications and worksite standards.

    Tools and equipment can include but is not limited to general engineering tools, specialised tools, test rig, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Ensure that all environmental aspects are taken into consideration as per environmental impact studies/management.

    No defective spares and fastening devices thrown around, cleaning solvent spillage is kept to a minimum, no old or excessive grease spilled on ground.

    Safe work practices when tests and checks are about to start on 3-kV DC high-speed circuit breaker (HSCB) can include but are not limited to OHSA, Electrical Safety Instructions (ESI), Engineering Instructions (EI) and Reliability Centered Maintenance schedules (RCM), etc.

    All the function tests required are completed to manufacturer's standards and worksite standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Function tests can include but are not limited to insulation resistance tests, minimum operating voltage, trip tests, auxiliary contact tests, insulation tests, motor functional tests, hi-pot tests, calibration tests, operation time, operational indicators and alarms, etc.

    All the remote operation tests required are completed to manufacturer's standards and worksite standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Remote operation tests can include but are not limited to initiating indication from control panel or computer, fault alarms, indicators etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All equipment worked on is inspected and set for return to service as per maintenance procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    3-kV DC regeneration equipment worked on and set for return to service can include but are not limited to breaker trucks, arc chute, control circuits, resistance continuity, as per reliability centered maintenance (RCM), maintenance schedules, etc.

    Complete all tasks on 3-kV DC regeneration equipment in traction sub-stations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The `as found` and `as left` conditions are recorded analysis and reporting of defects, correct completion of the plant and defect history, including replacement spares fitted.

    Post maintenance and repair clean up process is completed according to industry standards, environmental requirements and site-specific standards.

    Waste material is disposed of according to site-specific standards and environmental policies and requirements.

    All tools and equipment is checked, cleaned and return for safe keeping according to work site house keeping procedures and standards.

    Other necessary documentation is completed and submitted to designated personnel, as well as all manuals and guidelines are returned for safe keeping as per work site procedures and standards.
