PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to mining and rock engineering personnel who are responsible for the evaluation and monitoring of rock mass conditions in working places.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the conditions that result in potential fall of ground hazards.
  • Identify the hazards and determine risks associated with falls of ground.
  • Implement appropriate controls.
  • Communicate recognised hazards and associated risks.
  • Monitor the risk.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and an understanding of applying risk assessment processes to rock related hazards in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the conditions that potentially result in fall of ground hazards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Explanations of naturally occurring conditions that can create rock related hazards are provided in terms of fall of ground. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conditions must include the following:
  • Presence of geological structures.
  • Intersection of geological structures.
  • Presence of water.
  • Host rock type characteristics.
  • Changes in rock type.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Explanations of mining related conditions that can create rock related hazards are provided in terms of fall of ground. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conditions must include the following:
  • Blasting damage to surrounding rock and installed support units.
  • Deterioration in support unit effectiveness.
  • Poor support installation quality.
  • Absence of support.
  • Removal of support.
  • Seismic activity.
  • Rockburst related damage to surrounding rock and installed support units.
  • Stress-induced fracturing.

    Identify the hazards and determine risks associated with falls of ground. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All tools, material and equipment required for hazard identification are selected, examined and ensured to be ready for use in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rock related hazards are identified in the fall of ground context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hazards must include the following:
  • Geological structure related.
  • Support related.
  • Blasting/mining related.
  • Excavation wall related (hangingwall, roof, sidewall, footwall).

    The risk level associated with the hazard is estimated through the use of the risk assessment process.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
