PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners involved in primary emergency care/first aid and the emergency care field. The range of equipment against which this unit standard will be assessed is that specified for use within the general structure of the South African emergency services, including but not limited to occupational health and safety, ambulance, medical rescue, fire and related services as applicable to the current relevant legislation. Specialised or other risk-profile specific equipment is not encompassed within the scope of this unit standard.

The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Maintaining and operating commonly utilised emergency equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ensuring that any equipment used is safe for use, and is used in a manner that will enhance own and patients' safety.
  • Explaining the need for and ways of compensating for operational limitations for specific pieces of emergency equipment.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Select emergency equipment appropriate to a specified emergency incident and demonstrate the use of this equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is selected according to the nature of the emergency called in, in order to achieve the desired outcome. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Complimentary/supplementary combinations of equipment are selected and the reason for the selection of each one is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of the equipment selected is demonstrated at the scene of the emergency; the reason/s for non-use of any selected equipment are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Demonstration includes simulating procedures in relation to the emergency situation where actual use of equipment is not warranted.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate the maintenance and storage requirements of emergency service equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Each piece of equipment is stripped, cleaned and re-assembled according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Each cleaned piece of equipment is tested for functioning before being stored for re-use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All used disposable parts/pieces are appropriately discarded and replaced with fresh pieces before equipment is stored for re-use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The care/maintenance of the emergency equipment is recorded according to organisational and, where applicable, legislated requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the operational limitations of specific pieces of emergency equipment and suggest and/or demonstrate ways of compensating for these limitations.

    One method of compensation for operational limitation is described and demonstrated per piece of equipment.

  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider by the relevant ETQA or ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and agreed ETQA procedures.
