PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard will be able to define and describe legal concepts in a broad civil legal framework specific to the sheriff's profession. They will also be able to explain legal requirements and documents utilized by sheriffs in order to comply with standards.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Interpreting legal concepts in relation to the sheriff's profession.
  • Interpreting legal requirements in the Sheriffs Act (Act 90 of 1986).
  • Distinguishing between legal documents used in civil and criminal proceedings.

    Legal concepts may include but are not limited to Civil Law enforcement, sources of law, jurisdiction, juristic persons, court processes, insolvency, and human rights.

    Legal concepts are described which are specific to the sheriff's profession.

    The consequences of not understanding legal concepts impacting on the sheriff's profession are explained with examples.

    Interpret legal requirements in various legal prescripts that impact on the sheriff's profession.

    The sheriff's statutory Code of Conduct is explained in order to ensure compliance within the profession.

    Legal requirements in the Sheriffs Act are explained in order to comply with professional standards.

    The salient features of the Insolvency Act, which impact on the sheriff's profession, are explained with examples.

    Legislation that directs and/or limits the sheriff's actions is identified in terms of their impact.

    Distinguish between legal documents used in civil and criminal proceedings.
