PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to apply safety procedures whilst working alongside and aboard cargo ships to load and unload goods. The qualifying learner will equipped with the knowledge and skills to correctly use personal protective equipment and clothing and apply the relevant safety procedures in the execution of their duties.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Outlining the transport sector in South Africa.
  • Describing cargo ships and related lifting equipment.
  • Describing the responsibilities related to working on board a cargo ship.
  • Describing safety procedures whilst loading and offloading a cargo ship. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is desirable for learners wishing to achieve this unit standard to be competent at:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.

    Safety signs/symbols on cargo ships are identified according to the Code of Safe Working Practice for ships working cargo in South African Ports. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Risks associated with working on board a cargo ship are described in accordance with the Code of Safe Working Practice for ships working cargo in South African Ports. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Risks associated with working on the wharf side are described in accordance with the Code of Safe Working Practice for ships working cargo in South African Ports. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Emergency procedures are described in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reporting responsibilities are described in relation to non-compliance while working on board a cargo ship. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    Safety practices are briefly described as indicated within the Code of Safe Working Practice for ships working cargo in South African Ports.

    The role of the South African Maritime Safety Authority is described in terms of stevedoring operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The personal protective equipment and clothing for a given scenario is utilised in accordance with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) regulations. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a relevant qualification at a minimum of National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 2.
