PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the maintaining and promotion of safety and prevention of emergency incidents in the Adventure Based Learning environment. The qualifying leaner is also well positioned to act independently and pro-actively in dealing with such incidents as they arise.

The training of staff that can promote safety, pre-empt emergency incidents but also manage them well if they arise during physical activities, will create more secure environments to the benefit of clients, the facilitating companies, the individuals themselves and consequently the sub-field as a whole.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify hazards and assess risks in own area of responsibility using the outdoor recreation risk assessment process.
  • Contribute to safety procedures to manage risks in own area of responsibility.
  • Maintain the safety of participants and colleagues.
  • Supervise responses to incidents and emergencies.

    Identify hazards and assess risks in own area of responsibility using the outdoor recreation risk assessment process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Colleagues, participants and clients are encouraged to identify and report possible hazards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The risks associated with such hazards are evaluated in using the outdoor recreation risk assessment method to determine as to whether they are acceptable according to legal, national and organisational set criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Unacceptable risks are identified and reported to relevant authorities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A responsible colleague is consulted when own technical expertise is not sufficient to cope with the hazard or risk.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Learners are involved actively in developing and agreeing on procedures for managing risks, ensuring that these procedures are consistent with the risk assessment and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Learners identify and report unacceptable risks and defer to a responsible colleague when their own technical expertise is not sufficient to cope with the hazard or risk.

    Appropriate authorities are informed when risks are not being safely managed.

    Participants and other support staff are instructed, informed and counseled so as to understand risks, hazards and safety procedures.

    Participants and other support staff are encouraged to be responsible for their own health and safety and that of all other participants.

    Colleagues are instructed in the independent monitoring of safety procedures with a view to intervening promptly where procedures are not being followed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Participants and colleagues are encouraged by learners to provide feedback on risks, hazards and safety procedures so that learners can use this feedback to improve risk management. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Supervise responses to incidents and emergencies.

    Incidents and emergencies are identified and assessed promptly when they occur.

    Appropriate first aid is applied in accordance with accepted legal and ethical principles.

    Participants and colleagues are directed to assist with the situation according to the emergency action plan.

    Appropriate assistance is summoned as soon as possible and clear information provided about the incident or emergency.

    Contributions to resolving an emergency situation, including possible evacuation of casualties, are made in line with the candidate leader's level of competence and responsibility.

    An accurate and detailed report of the incident is compiled for record purposes.

    Suggestions are made for preventing similar occurrences. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

  • Must show the ability to work under instruction of a mentor.
