PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard in combination with other content-related standards will be able to express an understanding of the need for and the value in volunteerism and be able to develop strategies to recruit, select and train volunteers. Developing a volunteer database will ensure the sustainability of sport programmes contributing to the improvement in the quality of life for all South Africans.

This unit standard, combined with other core and elective Sport standards in a National Certificate in Sport Management at NQF Level 5 will provide the learner with the competence to apply and practice supervisory skills.

Competent learners will provide the environment for quality experiences to participants and thus strengthen the profession in general.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Plan and implement strategies to recruit volunteers for sport organisations and tournaments.
  • Select and appoint volunteers to suitable positions.
  • Induct and train volunteers in a sport environment.
  • Manage volunteers in a sport environment.
  • Maximise volunteer retention.

    In addition they will be well positioned to extend their learning and practice into other areas of the Sport, Recreation or Fitness disciplines, or to strive towards professional standards and practices at higher levels.

    Plan and implement strategies to recruit volunteers for sports organisations and tournaments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Strategies are implemented to recruit volunteers.

    Coaching, umpiring, administration, catering, team support, management of sports tournaments and events, projects, finance, facilities, equipment, personnel, marketing, sponsorship, technical aspects, maintenance, competitions, teams, adult supervision, activity leaders, transport, care of uniforms.

    The criteria of the sport volunteers are established to ensure appropriate recruitment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    May include details of required knowledge, skills and attributes, responsibilities, accountability, commitment, rewards, reimbursement of costs, uniforms.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The motives of potential volunteers are clarified to ensure motivation and compliance to the requirements of the event.

    Enjoyment, socialization, career opportunities, personal development, professional development, personal contribution, loyalty, desire to do something different, support family members or friends, philanthropy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Volunteers are recruited from a variety of sources to ensure fairness and reach.

    Past and present membership, referrals, local community and community groups, students, volunteer agencies, churches, people who are unemployed, service organisations, cultural groups.

    Select and appoint volunteers to suitable positions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Volunteers are assessed on the basis of their knowledge, skills, experience, commitment and constraints. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personality and personal attributes, availability and personal resources are considered when assessing volunteers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A contract is signed upon the appointment of the volunteer detailing: the requirements of the job, volunteer motives and constraints, rewards, reimbursement of costs, provision of meals. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Induct and train volunteers in a sport or fitness environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Volunteers are familiarised with communication channels, support networks, administration procedures, legal requirements and implications for individuals, safety procedures, and social norms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Volunteer selections are made for the technical expertise within the sporting environment and trained against set criteria from a specific sporting code. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Media, security, emergency, accommodation of players, language services, parking, accreditation, information management, maintenance of equipment and playing surfaces.

    Manage volunteers in a sport environment.

    Volunteers are motivated through on-going supervision and feedback, acknowledgment of work, awards, rewards, opportunities to use own initiative, team work and new challenges. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Feedback relating to various factors is obtained in successfully managing volunteers. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to workload, commitment, satisfaction with tasks, satisfaction with rewards, changes in motivation, perceptions of the organisation and its management.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The database system for sport volunteers is developed and updated regularly and distributed to all sporting codes participating in the volunteer programme.

    Maximise volunteer retention.

    A climate is developed of recognition and support for volunteers for the National Volunteer Implementation System in Sport.

    Individual requirements of volunteers are identified and incorporated into job descriptions.

    Volunteers are rewarded through socialisation, training, knowledge and skills, experience, travel, acknowledgement, status.
