PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard in combination with context expertise standard(s) will be able to reflect on and make informed choices about attitudes and behavioural practice relevant to people living with HIV/AIDS. This unit standard aims to contribute to building a wider understanding of HIV/AIDS issues within the sport or fitness workplace; to create greater awareness of the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS; and to promote the development of sport and fitness programmes and facilities which are more responsive to the needs of those living with HIV and AIDS.

This unit standard provides a broad introduction to HIV/AIDS in the sport and fitness workplace. It introduces knowledge about HIV/AIDS that will enable learners to be informed and caring practitioners and contribute to the quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS through sport and fitness participation.

In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of HIV and AIDS and practices to reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Recognise the human and legal rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Support sport and fitness participation for people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Encourage healthy living for people affected by HIV/AIDS.

    Competent qualifying learners will further be able to actively promote safer sport, fitness or recreation environments and institute measures to reduce the inherent risks of participation.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of HIV and AIDS and practices to reduce the risk of transmission.

    The terms HIV, AIDS and HIV-positive are accurately defined and explained in layman's terms to an individual or group. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ways in which HIV is transmitted is described with reference to practices which may reduce the risk of transmission. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Common myths and misconceptions about HIV, AIDS and HIV transmission are identified with reference to the possible implications for the sport and fitness environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The improbability of HIV transmission is explained within the context of sport and fitness participation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The role and responsibilities of sport and fitness practitioners is explained with regard to the prevention of HIV transmission. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Universal precautions to prevent HIV transmission are described and correctly applied within the sport and fitness environment.

    Support sport and fitness participation for people living with HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Participants living with HIV/AIDS are referred, using correct protocols, to the appropriate medical practitioner for physical examination and medical clearance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Recommendations and limitations prescribed by the relevant medical practitioners are adhered to when implementing a sport or fitness programme for a participants living with HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The positive and negative effects of exercise training and participation in physical activity are described with reference to the health and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The stages of HIV infection are defined and recommendations provided for safe and effective participation in sport, fitness or recreation activities during each stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safe and appropriate sport, fitness or recreation activities are recommended to participants living with HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Appropriate safety precautions and risk management strategies are applied when implementing a sport, fitness or recreation programmes for a participants living with HIV/AIDS.

    Recognise the human and legal rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The impact of HIV/AIDS pandemic as a social and economic issue that affects all members of our society is explained with specific reference to people living in Sub-Saharan Africa. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Current legislation and national policies relating to HIV/AIDS are defined and explained with reference to the implications for the sport, recreation environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but not limited to:
  • The Constitution, Labour Relations Act, Employment Equity Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, Medical Schemes Act.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS are explained with reference to the implications for the sport, fitness and recreation environment practitioners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The possible problems that a participant with HIV/AIDS could encounter in the sport or fitness setting are listed with suggestions as to what the practitioner could do to create a caring, tolerant environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The role and responsibilities of sport and fitness practitioners is explained in preventing stigmatisation and discrimination directed at people living with HIV/AIDS. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Encourage healthy living for people affected by HIV/AIDS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The prospects of a person surviving with AIDS are discussed with reference to the latest scientific views on well-being of an HIV positive person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of lifestyle changes to boost the immune system and prevent re-infection is explained to participants living with HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Health promoting behaviours are recommended to participants living with HIV/AIDS. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

  • Balanced nutrition, eating habits, lifestyle, time management, substance abuse, sleeping, relaxation, stress.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A contact list of reputable HIV/AIDS prevention and wellness programmes and support organisations available in the community is drawn up and participants living with HIV/AIDS are appropriately referred when necessary.
