PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will lead learners to acquire knowledge and skill to effectively manage risks arising from trauma and loss in themselves or others. It could be useful for peer counselors, community counselors and managers to understand the debriefing process and to know to refer individuals who have experienced a traumatic event.

A manager in the context of this Unit Standard is the manager of a small business and first line managers of business units, team leaders and supervisors in medium and large organisations. The term business unit implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The Unit Standard was developed as a means of contributing to change in leadership focus and empowering managers to look at people issues.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Recognising reactions to post trauma stress.
  • Explaining trauma debriefing and the referral process.
  • Explaining possible support strategies.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 2.

    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • A traumatic event includes, but is not limited to loss or trauma resulting from crime and violence, terrorism, sexual assault, road accidents, death, divorce, AIDS, serious terminal illness and natural disasters.

    Observable cognitive symptoms that could indicate post trauma stress are described with examples.

    Observable cognitive symptoms include, but are not limited to decision making ability, concentration, memory and disorientation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Observable emotional symptoms that could indicate post trauma stress are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Observable emotional symptoms include, but are not limited to loss of emotional control, inappropriate emotional response, anxiety and depression.

    Observable behavioural symptoms that could indicate post trauma stress are described with examples.

    Observable behavioural symptoms include, but are not limited to behavioural changes, anti social acts, substance abuse.

    Support services available for trauma debriefing are identified in a specific area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process to be followed in referring an individual for debriefing is explained with reference to the process of a specific organisation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Possible post trauma support strategies are explained and an indication is given of when each is appropriate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ways in which a traumatised individual can be reasonably accommodated are identified for a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A report on how the individual is to be reasonably accommodated in a specific situation is compiled and communicated to the appropriate parties.
