PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to lift and move loads not exceeding five tons.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the factors critical to lifting and moving loads.
  • Prepare to lift and move a load.
  • Lift and move a load.
  • Make the load available for production purposes.

    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • The principle of operation of lifting equipment at NQF Level 2.
  • Selection, examination and use of lifting equipment at NQF Level 2.
  • Safe lifting and moving practices at NQF Level 2.

    This unit standard covers manual lifting equipment and must include:

    The principle of the operation, selection, examination and use of lifting equipment and attachments to lift and move a load, in accordance with specified requirements.

    The importance of lifting and moving loads, showing a clear understanding of the direct consequences to self and the business. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include:
  • Injury to persons, damage to equipment, loss of production time through breakdowns and increased costs.

    The possible critical hazards and substandard conditions that may be encountered while lifting and moving the load in a particular context, as well as how to deal with them so as to be consistent with accepted best practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission to enter the workplace, when required, is obtained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used to ensure the safety of persons and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tools, material and equipment that are required for lifting and moving a load are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The lifting equipment is inspected in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The workplace is examined in accordance with specified requirements and any hazardous and substandard conditions are dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The mass of the load to be lifted is verified in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences that inadequate preparation for the lifting and moving of the load (i.e. not in line with specified requirements and current legislation) may hold for occupational health, safety and production are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required personal protective equipment is used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used so that the safety of persons and equipment is protected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suspension, as well as the attachment points required for lifting and moving the load is examined and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The load is lifted in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The load is moved and positioned in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work-related hazards are dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedures. Risks associated with lifting and moving loads are explained.

    Interpersonal interaction is positive, consistent with specified requirements and promotes effective teamwork. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The tools and equipment are used in accordance with manufacturers' design and without injury to self and others.

    The consequences for occupational health, safety and production of not lifting and moving the load in line with specified requirements and current legislation are explained.

    Compile the report on the work performed, in compliance with specified requirements for format, content, accuracy and distribution. The report is submitted within the agreed time.

    Explain the consequences for occupational health, safety and production of not making the load available for production purposes in line with specified requirements and current legislation.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the learner is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the learner can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
