PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the electronic security industry who need to understand the concepts and principles of assessing threats in order to specify, design, sell, plan, and install electronic security systems. It is intended for installers, specifiers, sales people, technicians and anyone who will be involved in any aspect of assessing threat for an electronic security installation. Learners will understand the principles of risk assessment associated with electronic security installations.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of electronic security principles.
  • Describe factors influencing electronic security protection.
  • Design electronic security protection installations.

    Objectives may include but are not limited to client security requirements, client budgetary constraints, eliminating false/nuisance alarms, easy operation, effectiveness, equipment, planning, access.

    Threat levels are described for risk assessment purposes.

    Threat levels may include but are not limited to personal protection, protection of valuables, history, access, existing security measures, operational requirements, legislation, location, crime, exposure.

    Security measures are explained in terms of their advantages, disadvantages and limitations.

    Security measures may include but are not limited to zoning, structural, operational, and electronic.

    Physical factors are described in terms of their influence on risks and threats.
