PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to understand elementary process instrumentation in a processing environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Understand the general principles of process instrumentation.
  • Demonstrate understanding of pressure measurement and -gauges.
  • Demonstrate understanding of temperature measurement and -gauges.
  • Demonstrate understanding of flow measurement and -gauges.

    The purpose of instrumentation is explained in terms of its measurement, recording and control functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Instruments should include both local digital- and remote analogue (dial) types.

    Process instrumentation applications are outlined in terms of the specific workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Simple signal transfer methods are described in terms of their workplace applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Simple instrumentation terminology is used as applicable to the workplace. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes assigning labels to instrument abbreviations for example PI (pressure indicator), TR (temperature recorder), LIC (level indicator controller).

    The concepts and importance of instrument calibration, zero checking, accuracy and reliability are explained in terms of their workplace applications.
