This unit standard will be useful to people who work or intend to work within a mining and minerals context. These persons seek to acquire recognition in the essential knowledge and understanding pertaining to the kinds of mineral found in South Africa, their beneficiation, and importance to local stakeholders and within the global arena.

Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the typical minerals found in South Africa.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the importance of the minerals to stakeholders in South Africa.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the international importance of the South African Minerals Industry.

    The importance of individual minerals within the South African Mining & Minerals industry is explained through a description of their contribution to the total minerals industry, GDP and exports.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
