PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and values to participate effectively in workplace activities within the CTFL manufacturing industries, specifically in the Clothing industry. This unit standard will provide the learner with the necessary skills and knowledge to design and make patterns for sewn products, including all the various processes in design preparation.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining the processes involved in the design and development of a sewn product.
  • Identifying customer needs, completing product specifications and completing basic technical drawings.
  • Identifying and using design, development and pattern making tools.
  • Taking body measurements and reading basic size charts.
  • Drafting basic blocks and making basic patterns.
  • Compiling basic specifications and basic cost sheets. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1.

    Learners must be able to:
  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the calculation of areas, volumes and quantities. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This standard applies to the Clothing sector:
  • The number of basic blocks to be drafted are four and the blocks should cover the upper body (including sleeves) and the lower body.
  • The number of patterns to be completed are four and can be for any mens, ladies or kiddies outwear or underwear garment.
  • Patterns should include features which demonstrate an understanding of the following techniques:
    > Large parts - seaming, proportion, balance.
    > Addition and disposal of fullness.
    > Small parts - collars, cuffs, waistbands, pockets etc.
    > Edge finishes - openings, hems, facings etc.
  • Tools for design, development and pattern making can include, but are not limited to scissors, tape measures, rulers, set square, awl, pattern notcher, pencils, computers.
  • The correct method, time and quality standards for drafting basic blocks and patterns must be applied as determined by customer, company and recognised industry standards.
  • Fabric types can include wovens, non-wovens and knits.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
