PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to understand and apply basic setting out of works in the building construction industry using basic survey equipment such as measuring tapes, ranging rods, levels and a theodolite.

This competence complements the other core supervisory competencies and underpins the Elective learning.

It contributes to the development of a professional community of Building Construction Supervisors. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Its contribution to socio-economic transformation is that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The typical scope of this unit standard is:
  • Setting out principles include the setting out of squares, curves, elevations, slopes, distances, vertical and horizontal surfaces.
  • Reference and survey control systems include setting out points (SOP), benchmarks, grids, centre and staked lines, as well as all survey control work.
  • Setting out by theodolite is limited to, setting up an instrument, setting out straight lines, setting out horizontal angles and distances.
  • Levelling and the transfer of levels include vertical measurement (heights, elevations and levels), the use of an automatic level and levelling staff, reading, booking and reducing of levels.
  • Reducing of levels includes both Collimation and Rise and Fall methods.
