PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Planning and preparing to maintain and restore low voltage switchgear for servicing

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

    1. Authorisation is obtained according to the plant permit system.

    2. Low voltage switchgear is isolated and made safe to work on according to OHS Act and industry specific regulations.

    3. Equipment, test instruments, tools and personal protective equipment needed for maintenance is selected, inspected and checked for functionality and safety prior to commencement of tasks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Low voltage switchgear is identified and required tools, equipment, components and personal protective equipment are obtained prior to maintenance.

    5. LV switchgear maintenance equipment and cleaning materials are selected and made available for task.

    1. Personal protective equipment is used and site safety procedures are adhered to throughout maintenance.

    2. The correct site approved cleaning materials and solvents are utilised during maintenance.

    3. Arc quenching mechanism and all removable and replaceable components are removed according to manufacturer's specifications and maintenance standard procedures. Control circuit components e.g.: switches, contactors, relays, indication lamps and measuring instruments. Equipment components e.g.: contacts, CT's, VT's and coils.

    4. Switchgear and control mechanisms are cleaned according to site standards and procedures.
