PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard applies to persons who will need to supervise the operation of a shooting range or shooting exercises in respect of tactical use of firearms.

Benefit to society of this unit standard is that persons who need to supervise tactical training will contribute to the safety of tactical situations.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the standards and legislation required for the setup and operation of a shooting range.
  • Carry out an inspection of a shooting range. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Communication at NQF 02. It is further assumed that the following unit standards relating to the firearm have been completed before attempting this unit standard:

    Unit Standard: Apply tactical knowledge in the use of firearms.

    For handgun: 117705, 119649 and 123515 or 10748.
    For shotgun: 117705, 119652 and 123514 or 10754.
    For rifle: 117705, 119650, 119651 and 123519 or 10750 and 123511 or 10756.

    This unit standard may be completed with a handgun only, following the learning assumed to be in place listed above, or any combination i.e. handgun and shotgun or handgun and rifle or rifle and shotgun or it may be completed with all three firearms.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the standards and legislation required for the setup and operation of a shooting range. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Current SABS requirements for both indoor and outdoor shooting ranges are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Range commands applicable to tactical training exercises are described in accordance with safety standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Carry out an inspection of a shooting range. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The inspection must be carried out in order to determine whether or not the shooting range complies with SABS requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An inspection checklist is designed to determine shooting range compliance with SABS requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A safety assessment of a preset tactical training exercise involving live fire is carried out in relation to shooting angles and safe distances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A "Pre shoot safety briefing" is demonstrated in respect of a tactical training exercise. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    "Pre shoot safety briefing" includes informing learners what dangers exist in the exercise before they begin, in order to minimize the risk of injury or harm to people or property.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ability to conduct a night shooting exercise is demonstrated in a structured scenario. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Night shooting must include: a live fire shooting exercise with a minimum of four learners on the firing line.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

    Any assessor assessing against this unit standard, must be registered as a subject matter expert at the relevant ETQA in respect of firearm training. Due to the nature of the activity it is essential that all assessors prove that they are capable of successfully completing the practical components of this unit standard, before being registered as assessors.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.
