PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable the learner to describe the requirements applicable to a permit to work in terms of hot work; cold work; confined space entry and lockout systems in a work area.

Persons accredited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe the requirements for hot and cold work permits.
  • Describe the requirements to apply a lock-out system.
  • Describe the requirements to apply a confined space entry permit.

    Authorisation requirements are described in accordance with organizational policies and procedures and include the method used for the requisition of equipment, processes and apparatus for maintenance.

    The method used for preparing for maintenance on equipment and or electrical apparatus is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The method used for cancellation of authorisation for maintenance on equipment and or electrical apparatus is described.

    The method used for the return of equipment and or electrical apparatus to service is described.

    Describe the requirements to apply a lock-out system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The responsibilities of the issuer and receiver of the test permit are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The specified requirements for testing the working environment, equipment and/or electrical apparatus before entering a confined space are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The responsibilities of the confined space entry permit receiver in terms of personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The responsibilities of the test permit receiver are described in terms of the requirements related to emergency situations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The procedure for the hand over of the permit on completion of work is described.

    Solve problems. By applying permit to work systems, the individual will be required to embark on remedial action, which requires problem solving.

    Work effectively with others as a member of a team/group/organization/community. The individual will have to take reasonable care of oneself and other's safety in the workplace, which shows concern for entire team and not only oneself. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING 
    Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively. As part of the team, the individual will take into account the activities around him/her and ensure that his/her actions are complementary. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING 
    Collect, organize and critically evaluate information. When applying permit to work systems, the individual will have to collect and organise information in such a way that he/she will be able to evaluate it and make decisions.

    Communicate effectively using visual, mathematics and language skills in the modes of oral and written presentations. Remedial action resulting from applying permit to work systems, must be communicated to all relevant persons.
