PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is a core standard and forms part of the qualification, Higher Diploma: Professional Golfing for Club Professionals, and is registered at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be working within a golf club environment, specialising in the golf retailing, added services to golf clubs, golf coaching, sports science and golf event management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to one's job. This standard will also add value to individuals who are seeking to develop a career pathway towards an accomplished sports management and sports administration specialist.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing and applying basic knowledge and principles relating to the golf swing.
  • Analysing, describing and demonstrating the pre-swing phase in golf swing building.
  • Analysing, describing and demonstrating the in-swing phase in golf swing building.
  • Analysing, describing and demonstrating the post-swing phase in golf swing building.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    All learners accessing this qualification must be in possession of a Further Education and Training Certificate or equivalent qualification, bearing in mind the learning assumed to be in place. Learners will have competences in a first and second language, as well as communication NQF Level 4, mathematical literacy as per the NQF level 4.

    Describe and apply basic knowledge and principles relating to the golf swing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The history of literature relating to the golf swing is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact variables affecting ball flight are explained and demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Impact variables include club face position, swing path, angle o attack and club head speed.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relationship between laws, principles and preferences in the golf swing are understood and applied to a teaching model for the golf swing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The effects of non-square impact on the golf ball trajectory are described and demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The factors determining ball flight are explained and examples provided.

    Analyse, describe and demonstrate the pre-swing phase in golf swing building.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The golf swing is defined and its important characteristics analysed and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Important characteristics of the golf swing include, but are not limited to, purpose, accuracy, consistency, power, efficiency, injury avoidance, effectiveness, and swing phases.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The grip or hold in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The grip in the golf swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: hand and wrist function, requirements of a good grip, overlap grip, interlock grip, ten fingered grip, grip choice, strong weak and neutral grip, and detecting grip errors.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The aim in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The aim in the golf swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: importance, aiming process, aiming the clubface, aiming the body, alternative approaches, and basic pre-shot routine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The setup in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The setup in the golf swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: importance, ball position, preparedness, posture, weight distribution, alternatives, and left right balance.

    Analyse, describe and demonstrate the in-swing phase in golf swing building.

    Swing technique in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Swing technique in the golf swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: technique as a whole, basic technique, general points, the swing in action and impact.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Swing plane in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Swing plane in the golf swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: the concept, differentiating between plane and arc, arc length and with, importance and influences on plane, flat and upright planes and visual description.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Dynamic balance in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Dynamic balance in the swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: importance, leg function, weight transfer, rotation and swing centre.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Leverage in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Leverage in the swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: importance, lever system, arm function, wrist cock, release and connection.

    Analyse, describe and demonstrate the post-swing phase in golf swing building.

    Follow through in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples.

    Feedback in relation to the golf swing, is analysed, described and demonstrated with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Playing golf on a golf course is demonstrated in relationship the golf swing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Playing the course in relationship to the golf swing includes, but is not limited to an analysis of: awkward lies, uphill, downhill and sidehill lies, and swinging from fairway bunkers.
